Leaving a bike hooked up to an optimate

Is it ok to leave a bike hooked up to an optimate battery charger for a long time?

I left my project bike standing for a few weeks untill I got an optimate from my Dad and charged the battery, but I'm not sure if it will mess the battery up if I just leave it hooked up when the battery is fully charged as I probably won't be starting it all that often but I don't want to have to buy a new battery.

Actually it depends on how long because without use the battery becomes dependent on the optimate

The optimate mimics the bikes charging system,no problems.

In fact as far as I can remember the later ones are ok to leave on for ages (optimate 3), the earlier ones are not as good
