Anyone work for Royal Mail? sorting offices etc..

I got a card through door the other day from Royal Mail, about temporary xmas jobs... now seeing as I'm skint and have big plans next year I could do with a month of extra work alongside my full time job... the card says that its for casual work to fit around other committments etc, so I presume there would be some shifts to suit me...

just wondered if anyone here works or has worked in the sorting offices, what its like? what does it actually involve (yes yes i know, sorting mail lol ) and is it hard work?

whats the pay like roughly?

it'd be a lot of working hours alongside my main job , but as its only for a month im sure i could bear it for the extra cash!

or any other ideas for a temporary flexible job around xmas time to bring in some extra cash... ?

I did this part time about 4-5 years ago. Expect to work very early or very late shifts (usually).

You will either be unloading mail bags into trolleys by Postcode, unbundling envelopes to feed into the automatic sorter, sorting mail by size or putting sorted mail in post code pigeon holes for the posties to collect.

Take your ipod with you as this work requires no brain power whatsoever.

I got paid about£7/h at the time.

Oh and be prepared for lots of paper cuts lol.

High street stores like HMV/Woolworths etc usually have signs in the windows for XMAS temp staff, not sure on details though.

Arent they currently on strike? And arent they planning random strikes up to christmas? Part time jobs no good if part of that time is on the picket for eff all. You could always scab it and provide the public with the service theyve paid for though!!

I did this about 2 years ago. I worked 6pm to 2am but if we finished early then we could go home and we still got the full shifts pay which was nice.

All I had to do was sit in front of a bank of pidgeon holes and put the post into the right postcode pidgeon holes. It was really easy and a bit boring but being paid £7/ph was ok. I'd say it was well worth it as I did it for 3 weeks and got about £1k on top of my regular job which obviously came in handy for Christmas

Also do what Kaben says and take your Ipod as you will get bored!

I think I'm going to apply to my local sorting office as they are taking on Christmas temps. Already doing a fulltime day job though, but the money would come in so nice, especially as most evenings are spent just sitting around doing nowt!

Gives me an excuse to get an iPod too

The more money the Royal Mail looses from revenue etc will = job cuts anyway. So most posties are looking at loosing jobs anyway.

Like they said on the news, business will just use couriers and email more often now, thus leaving Royal Mail without much business and so won't need have the whinging staff.
