Assuming I pass my retest tomorrow, I'll be big-bike hunting before the year's out, and I'm in need of some ideas/suggestions.

The criteria:

Arrow Sports styling
Arrow Fairly low (I'm about 5'6")
Arrow Not too heavy
Arrow Reasonable service and insurance costs
Arrow Restrict'able to 33bhp
Arrow Suitable for long-distance/motorway travel

My budget: Around £1,500. Assuming I can find another careful lady owner for Betsy, '05 plate with 8k on her clock... Bradford Motorcycles will offer me £1,400 trade-in so perhaps a little less than that on a private sale....

Thinking of something like this...

https://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/BIKES_popup.jsp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_bikes_full&photo=1&state=%27%27&sort=&make=KAWASAKI&min_pr=1000&source=0&model=ANY&max_pr=2000&ccappr=600&agerange=&miles=30&keywords=&mileage=&postcode=LS4+2QS&ukcarsearch_full.x=50&ukcarsearch_full.y=7&start=6&distance=27&adcategory=BIKE&channel=BIKES&id=200740296029904
Was also looking at a CRB400/600 (or any sports 400, purely for the size/weight/height).

Any ideas gratefully accepted Thumbs Up Karma

Join the 400 club Thumbs Up Cool

Have a read of Marjay's Guide to 400cc sportsbikes

For £1,500, this time of year, you should be able to find a nice example of any of them, & it'll tick your boxes.

400's take better to rescriction than bigger bikes generally, so i hear.

I'd say you've just described an NC30 or NC29, or perhaps and early SV650.

I have a decent thundercat 600 in really good condition that needs nothing doing, not been thrashed around and has not been in an accident.

See I thought that too. Problem is these bikes are quickly becoming a dying species. Good ones are becoming harder and harder to find, and when you do find one they are fairly pricey in comparison to more available newer bikes.

Having owned an NC30 I'd happily recommend one to anyone. But you'll need luck on your side to find a good bargin.

Also if a dealer will offer you 1400 on a trade in you should reasonable presume to get at least this or more for a private sale... After all they usually expect to make a profit on your bike.

Good luck with the test and hope you find a good bike!

Tim

As I said yesterday, the NC29/NC30 is smaller than betsy, a 'supersports' bike, faster(obviously) and most that come up for sale are pretty tidy as people use them as a stepping stone to something more powerful. 400Grey bike is one of the best places to start at in regards to these types, and there's quite a few members on here with them. Thumbs Up

Steve, I agree apart from this:

Actually most have been used by overexcited 17 year olds, just passed their test who either thrash the bollocks off them or throw them down the road.

There are loads of absolute shitters out there. But the nice ones tend to stand out. Late 90's ones stand a better chance of being in decent condition, but not always.

Aye totally, I was saying the same thing to Steve yesterday. My old NC30 had had one owner every year for the last 8 years. Of which I imagine all of them were young first time riders. It was extremely unloved. The air filter was black from dirt it hadn't been changed in so long, the oil filter had rusted to the engine casing, oil was horrendous etc etc....

Nobody had carried out any of the basic maintainence jobs or services. The carb balance and valve clearances were so overdue the fuel economy was under 1/2 what it should normally be!

Whatever you decide to do make sure you take someone who really knows what they are doing (unless you've got a really good idea yourself) when you go to get your next bike.

Just put a downpayment on a VFR 400 NC30 1992 model today and asking price was 1650 but if you can find a few faults (hopefully not) you can haggle a bit, i got mine down to 1575 and it is a gorgeous bike and they aren't too heavy Very Happy

Go for it!!! Very Happy

Brier Thumbs Up

ROFL! I've never actually seen/heard anyone else refer to her by name before Laughing Can hardly type for laffin'!

Aye I remember you sayin... I've looked at a few on the interwaffle but never in the flesh, so to speak. It's time I took a ride out to a few garages and dealerships and had a snoop around. All I can remember about 'bigger' bikes is my instructor holding a few up whilst I sat on them, wibbling and sweating in case I knocked 'em over.

The big compromise for me is between having long-distance comfort (i.e. motorways... it's a two-hour ride to see the folks) and the weight of the thing. If I thought I could easily get used to a 600cc machine it'd make my searching/deciding a lot easier.

Oooh looky I like this one https://used-bikes.vivastreet.co.uk/motorbikes-sale-buy/kawasaki-zxr400-l1-1991-hreg#

Ducky if you're up at Squires next weekend let me know, you're welcome to have a sit on/poke at my CBR Thumbs Up Very Happy

That babyninja looks nice Thumbs Up , bit overpriced though tbh. Prices are lower this time of year and that is fairly old.

Ooh... that's a good idea, but I'm home on the range next weekend - boo. I had a look about last time I was there but I didn't do any pokin'... can't imagin that'd go down too well Mr. Green

But next time you're goin, yeah, please. Need to see these things in the flesh. It's a big ol' decision. Getting Betsy was easy, it was love at first sight. But there's so much to think about now. And I'm far too excited to think sensibly about this. I'll end up with a serious jalopy if I don't ask the right questions first.

lee36 : I had a sit on an SV650 a few weeks back and it was nice, my feet didn't touch the ground either... it's a popular choice of laydeez bike tho I hear. What's the wind factor like on them?

id suggest a triumph tt600 or a thundercat

thundercat is better for everyday and longer distance

tt600 is better for fun on twisty roads at weekends
