google maps says 3400ish KM about 2 days traveling by road, which means bring a 4litre bottle of oil , some BT21s chain adjuster tool maybe a scotoiler with a big tank = not too bad.

Forgetting the fucking ring was what caused my 900mile trip to Falmouth , reaching into my pocket opening an empty ring box ,shouting FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK turning round , riding back to Manchester, picking the ring up , sleeping for an bit, then riding back down again.

Just bring a 4litre bottle of oil , 2 bottls of scotoiler oil , a spanner to undo your sump bolt, and a oil filter tool , or just use your hand on the oil filter like I do, if you are environmentally concious bring a drain pan , or just get a big bag , drain oil into the bag tie it up , then fill your new oil into the sump, then pour the old oil into the bottle,

Or just undo it let it out all over the field or what not ....

or just use full synth which is reputed to be capable of 25000miles without a change says my ex courier bud.

Mate, if you did it, it would be immense. think how how awesome it would be!

If you are going to propose, then consider bringing a friend with you. I know it sounds weird, but it will be nice for the ride down and its always good to have someone else there to be safe if you are a bit apprehensive to start off with.

Just looking at google maps now, I see a rough route that goes

Calais -> Luxembourg -> Stuttgart -> Munich -> Graz (Austria) -> Zagreb (Croatia) -> Belgrade (Serbia) -> Sofia (Bulgaria) and then into Turkey.

You could cross the Bosporus Bridge in Istanbul (the border between Asia and Europe... thats some big shit right there!)


I'm drooling at the thought of that journey. Obviously it would have to be a fully prepared effort.. not a case of popping round to the shops if you get what I mean.

Those Eastern Europe countries sound scary, but they are fine if you stick to the main routes. (My experience is from train journeys.. not biking) Should be relatively ok for finding dealerships too I would have thought in the cities.


But yeah - It would need planning and would be a hell of a big journey for someone with no experience of touring. But you've got to start somewhere, right? Get some European breakdown cover and hit the highway with a tent and some frying pans

I have insurance im sure through my bank right now.
And insurance anywhere on my credit card....this would obviously be more than just a trip to propose....

Im worried, ive got a ZX7R....um, i can pick up panniers easy enough but i'd need more...tank bag i suppose....i do have a large burgen to which doesnt effect me riding.
I've only been to Belgium and thats from here, to the ferry and then some motorway.
This would be epic, im not sure where to start.
I mean obviously route first....what about tyres, if you have a blow out during the trip....you're fucked if your in a small town

Can this really be done?
I have about 10 days holiday left at work, maybe 14 if i dont have days of at christmas.

You're best off waiting till some of the more experienced bikers show up.

I have good travel knowledge of Europe by rail, but my total time biking is about 1.5 hours on the road

Maybe just easier getting an easyjet flight, but I can't help but see the beauty of the bike choice.


Although, on the flipside, it would probably involve a lot of motorway miles as you'd be on a timelimit with a goal at the end, so maybe less likely to just ride along the best roads you see, but rather stick to the best ways of getting distance under your belt.

Alternatively, although slightly cheating, you can always go by bike till say southern Germany / Austria where its basically like riding through the UK as far as infrastructure and civilisation etc is concerned. Then jump on a plane or train from there and leave your bike in a secure airport carpark or something?
That could be an option if you were wanting to make an adventure out of it. Unfortunately it lacks the possibility of having your wife to be as pillion riding through Istanbul wooping at everyone

You could do it, it depends if you want to or not.

As tatters said unless your bike is tip-top you'll probably need a little time to prep it before you go. Give it a good servicing, make sure all the consumables are either new or very healthy, go over it checking for any potential faults.

Tyres are about 500 miles old...they are Bridgestone Battlax 04's so they'd probably last the trip and thats it!
Pads are about 5-800 miles old now.

She's coming out the garage today having plugs, carbs and valves done. I'm doing an oil change and giving it a once over before winter.
She's good to go in my opinion, but i don't think i've got close to 2K for the trip.

If i was going to go, how the hell would i be able to find my way, i haven't got a road map of the world in my pocket.

How many sandwiches would i need?

its 2700 miles out and 2700 miles back:

x1 set of BT20s should do it, bring a £20 tyre repair kit,
hell for 5700 miles you shouldn't even need to change the oil, maybe adjust the chain every day or so.

Contis are a cheaper option

and £500 of petrol , just take it easy and you should use less petrol and have a lower risk of a blow out stick to main routes and somebody will probably find you. remember petrol gets cheaper as you head out east, though maybe you should bring a jerry can just incase,

I'd say more is less , leathers , rain suit, pair of shorts trainers a couple of T shirts , shouldn't fill more than 20 litres ,

I dare say you can even hotel it , if you go big, ie do it in 3 days flat,each way so spend say £160 on hotels.

Buy a michelin map, infact buy two , you may lose it, covers all of Europe from here to Greece, at Greece buy another map,

Use my nav skills ie just follow a cardinal point ie SE or just bimble to Italy and follow the coast, you have to go the long way through Greece though. Just town hop, or you can follow super long distance lorries.

YMMV however since I'm pretty fearless the second I get on the bike

I think i could manage the mileage and and impretty good at finding my way......it's coming down to cash. You can only plan so much, and so far it looks to be over a months wages for me.

Mate, I've been to Italy and back on my CBR RR after doing a trackday at Silverstone. And I didn't touch a thing.

If you get it serviced before you leave, you'll be fine.

Forget oils and bottles and what-not..........

If you really must, get some spray-on chain wax. No need to fiddle with the bike.

1-2K is a v high figure I think

As said I went erm 3312.5miles to the saaf of france and back from Manchester and I spent in the region of £250 in petrol, note I am exceptionally throttle heavy and have extremely high cruising speed as Gman will attest (whenever somebody rides with me average MPG goes through the floor) ,

I reckon as a shoe string budget you can do it on £450 of petrol remembering it gets cheaper out east, £10 on tent, food your discretion. ferry £50. Though bring some spare cash of course,
