I just read a bit of the "What did you do at work today" thread, and maybe two or three of the people who have posted so far, in my opinion, have a job which requires any kind of skill.

I see this alot lately, for example; My mum's boyfriend is about... 45ish, has had jobs being a chef, in bars... and currently works for William Hill on a dogshit wage of about £5.50 an hour or something.... He doesn't drive, and as far as I know has no money in the bank... At 45, in that situation, i'd cut my wrists.

When I left school I had no GCSE above a D (Although that's more to not being arsed to do the work, than not being capable)... But I was fairly well versed in computers so I ended up working for a telesales company on about £200 a week at 17/18 which isn't so bad, but isn't enough either.
It's also clearly apparent that working with computers is saturated, and the grim reality of it is unless you become an absolute nerd and attain a high level IT job, a career in IT is going be resetting computers for idiots, and building dogturd computers for people who could probably buy something better from PC world for less money anyway.

I got another Job, in telesales, another sack of shit dead end job in the long run. That didn't appeal.

Currently i'm earning about £2.50 an hour... I'm 19 and earn just £100 a week, but in 4 years time, that £100 a week could be £1000 as long as i'm prepared to put the graft in. I'm currently an apprentice Electrician and going to work is actually something to look forward to and be proud of now... I get to learn how to use tools, build things, meet other tradesmen, have a laugh, be somewhere different everyday, and it will be a skill for life... I actually feel sorry for anybody I meet over 25 who works in a job that a school leaver could get, and can't understand why people don't feel the need to have a skill or aim to achieve something

A trade is a wonderful thing people, as is, I imagine, being in the forces... Property, Business.... there is more to working life than £6 an hour.

Quite right. Stay out of IT. We're sick of you know-alls coming in and showing us up.

Experience will eventually teach you that theres more to life than earning a top wage. If a friend is in a job that they actually like, and it's secure then why look down your nose at them just cos its min wage? Doesn't make them any less of a person, try not to judge them for their decisions.

Well done for being ambitious and wanting to work for a living, theres plenty fit & healthy folk out there who think the world owes them something for nothing, and will dodge work at all costs - feel free to look down your nose at them!

I agree to a point I found myself in very similar circumstances when leaving school. I did mostly sales jobs, industrial stuff: bearings, conveyor equipment etc... anyway 10 years ago I moved into I.T. after completing a degree. But I wouldn't say that if someone earns minimum wage that they either lack ambition or are no good. I mean we live in a world where there are different tiers in society (classes still if you will) and there's a similar pattern in industry and business. We need porters, cleaners, tea ladies, tyre fitters, herders etc... think about a world where no-one was willing to fulfil these jobs. Society would implode and we'd all die of some easily preventable illness, we each a have a place, a role to fulfill, and a talent to offer. And just to get really philosophical for a moment and answer the original question, happiness is subjective and what one person finds fulfilling another may not. Conversely others may not even consider happiness a prerequisite of their employment as the job may be just a means to an end, which in turn gives them happiness elsewhere in life, or maybe they don't live to work, but work to live. I sometimes get down that my job is dull and not that impressive (pays not great). I should have got back into IT training years ago! I was good at it. So, now I'm still doing support.

For me, it's circumstance that keeps me in my job (and perhaps making a wrong decision when I was younger). I have to work within a certain radius and can only do standard hours, I can't afford the time or money to study. . .

Sometimes you have to look at the 'other' things, like convenience, no stress, those things are worth a lot.

Because overtime people tend to realise money isn't everything, it is quite important but there is something I remember somebody said:

"you can't take it with you",

I've worked menial manual jobs before and still do sometimes , when I am insomniac the extra couple of quid comes in handy or the ability to go home and do nothing.

Although my company currently doesn't do this , in my old place people used to have to take work home, in the Big 4 companies everybody works late AND takes work home with them, thus theyt never have anytime to spend it.

I currently think time off is v important currently.

Its not about money, its about finding the right work, home life balance.
Sure we would all love to be earning a lot more than we do now, but it just ain't going to happen.
So at 48 i'm happy that i've got a job (only the 2nd since i was 16) that pays the bills, keeps a roof over my head and give me a bit spare to enjoy myself when i want to, with a bit of forward planning for the bigger stuff.

One thing getting older teaches you.. money isn't everything although it smooths a lot of stuff.
I can have just as much fun at home costing ZERO than going out and spending ££££

I had a job that I enjoyed, the stress levels were high but that was more to internal politics than the actual job, then after 20 years I was made redundant, all the things that were supposed to be important and had to be done within a millisecond didn't need doing and my job was defunked. The time and effort building the knowledge and skills up, the time I put work before family. Then my wife left me.
I have re trained and in a job that I still put the hours in, can still be stressful but in a different adrenaline way. The pay is ok but could be better and I'm as happy as a pig in muck. I have tranfered the skills I had, ie procedure knowledge, communication, people skills and put them to good use in my new job. I will never be rich in money but I will be rich in personal satisfaction that I am doing some good work in an enviroment that I enjoy.

I have been to a few funerals and I have never heard anyone discuss how much money the deceased earned. They often talk about how well liked they were by their peers, how sporting they were, how much quality time they spent with their children, how much they loved their partner, how much they did for charity and generally how selfless they were.

Money isn't everything. Greed is bad.

Someone had to be greedy so that the industrial revolution could start, or wars, as both are interlinked and both have brought out some really good inventions. So some greed is good.

Money isn't everything. Maslow is a famous example of what everything is to most people.

I accept your point but what evidence do you/we have that the industrial revolution was started or even fuelled by greed? I wonder whether needs and desires but not necessarily greed played a larger part.

Regards

ETA. BFG thanks for the link. My thoughts were not too far 'off the mark'. Thumbs Up

Thats old skool Adam Smith type thinking ie greed is good, as you get the spin offs of greed.

Problem was Smith never saw globalisation and does not realise things like labour as an input to a business feel pain,

thus greed in1900 was OK you HAD to build factories here but in 2007 biz would rather build factories elsewhere transfering the benefits elsewhere, He also never saw the advent of pollution not global warming per se but other things like heavy metals in water etc.

But going back to the relative happiness.

Just been watching that 'Meet the Natives' show and they don't have ANY of the stuff we have. But it was rated the happiest country on earth (which is just some stupid survey, but it wouldn't surprise me).

These guys were laughing all the time and just enjoying themselves... and they were living in straw huts without a care in the world other than where they would catch their next pig or whatnot.

I like that. Now adays we all want what we can't have. Why do we all work long hours for massive stints of our lives? Because we aim for that yacht, or that house on the beach.
Why can't we all enjoy what we have now? but then again, human's are greedy by nature (or is this just capitalist thinkers defending capitalism?).

Does anyone else ever dream of the chance of living like those people from Tanna (think that was the name). Just simple, enjoyable life with no stress?

Anyway, back to hugging trees Laughing

Yes I always dreamt of a Conan the Barbarian type existance, probably the closest kind of existance you can have to that is living as a nomad in Siberia selling Bear skins,

has anybody heard of the mexican fisher man story?

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "only a little while."

The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.

The American then asked, "but what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City, where you will run your expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"

To which the American replied, "15 - 20 years."

"But what then?" Asked the Mexican.

The American laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions!"

"Millions - then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

I've been in and around tradesmen during my working life and before....couldn't give a toss about money and travelling. I've worked with electricians and didn't get on with them, too much hassle, really annoying lads, there are exceptions but it seemed to be the general rule.
A mate of mine became a full time electrician, we never see him anymore...he's always on the go, has no time for a relaxing beer, or much else.

I've never wanted to work for myself, too much hassle, and i would hate having to talk about work for a large percentage of my life.
So i work for someone, and i hate that to, i hate corporate bullshi*, i dislike the mentality we have at work.
But i know i come in, tap buttons, do work, go home, and then thats where my fun begins.

I know that if i change job, i'll be happy until it all gets familier again, then back to what i just said above.

There are two trails up Uluru ( Ayers rock ) These are there because of the white tourists who climb up it, the Aborigines call them 'White Ants'. The Aborigines don't climb it because there is no food up there.

I actually feel sorry for anybody I meet over 25 who works in a job that a school leaver could get, and can't understand why people don't feel the need to have a skill or aim to achieve something

I feel sorry for YOU with such a bullshit attitude. I'm only 19 myself but I think you need to realise work and money aren't everything. Some people are happy just getting by, you'll be no better off with your monthly holiday to Barbados or your Porsche in the driveway...and to be fair with a trade you'll have no social life at all...you'll spend your days uplifting floor boards and crawling in attics, coming home to your bored wife at 8pm only to go to bed and repeat.

Hate pricks who look down on other people, go fuck yourself Thumbs Up

funnily enough i met a girl who had an ex who was a sparky

he had a similar, im better than you because i earn more attitude

he said to her that he was cleverer than her as he earned more

clever enough to try cheating on her thinking hed get away with it

he was wrong, so he now has to find somewhere else to live, or buy her out of her share of the house

pride comes before a fall

but at the same time, you are right, its good to have a job with a future, a marketable skill. Try not to look down on people who dont have that tho

i really should get one, but im not sure what. im too old to be an apprentice
