OK I'm looking at getting a car at the moment and have a budget of 5-6K to spend. I'm wanting something with decent performance and rear wheel drive. I'm looking for some recommendations. What are the options?

600cc turbo. Restricted to 100mph.

There is a kit to bolt a busa lump straight into it giving a 0-60 if 3.2 seconds. Cool

Can all be done within your budget too! Laughing Thumbs Up

If you can afford the insurance (as it is an import) I'd go for a Toyota Altezza RS200. It has the same engine as a MK2 MR2, but has variable valve timing on the inlet and exhaust valves. This takes it up to 220bhp. Its rear wheel drive and looks just like a Lexus IS200 (which I think are quite pretty) but goes a lot faster.

Alternatively you could get two MR2 turbos for that money.

What's the deal with the Mazda RX-7? I know it's quite old now, and I've heard they're a bit unreliable. Any views?

The tips on the rotary pistons weren't up for the job years back.....they used to disintegrate after (i think) 15K on the clock, that's why they have been sold in the past at certain times in their life.

Companies now have developed better components, they are made of one piece, from memory, not serveral. If you have it re-built in this fashion now, you have one of the most powerful, most reliable cars out there.

OK If you don't mind the stupidly bad fuel consumption and having to rebuild the engine every 5000 miles...

Hi

Only real experience of the Mazda RX7 was a friend who had the early model one, although his was an Elford turbo conversion (done from new and kept the warrenty).

Engine lasted 100000 miles, which was about normal for them. And he thrashed it to death.

Very smooth and quiet (there was a warning chime to tell you when you went into the red).

Petrol consumption could quite easily go down into single figures.

All the best

Keith

Sorry, my bad - seems that the engine falling apart every now and again only really happens on those that are turbo'd.

Don't you have to replace the seals regularly though?

Hi

His was turboed, and it was the seals that went at 100,000. About the expected life of them on a turboed early RX7.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Tough. Guy I used to work with had several and they were all played with to various extents (bored out, bigger turbos, larger intercoolers, etc).

All the best

200 sx's are good cars. ive had a couple, my brother had one, they all got thrashed and never died. come to think of it i had no problems at all with the two i had. i think the gripe with them is they arent too powerful compared to a lot of stuff these days - about 170 bhp if i remember rightly. however, they can be tuned to kick out a lot more ponies for not too much cash Thumbs Up

I'd go for something like this personally.

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ford-escort-mk2-rs2000-n-a-cosworth_W0QQitemZ130159965830QQihZ003QQcategoryZ29755QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not very practical though, no creature comforts but bloody good fun and a bit out of the ordinary. If you look after it you shouldn't loose to much when you decide to get rid.
