This should really be in the Geek section, but i need assistance quick.

Right basically, after trying many times to sort out wireless networking in my house, and actually getting it working, ive found out its running at quarter of the speed (1mb or less) and im not happy with it. So basically im gonna do a wired network,

Now the biggest length of Ethernet cable ive found is at maplin which is 25 metres, now i was wondering is there anywhere i could get bigger lengths than that from?

Ive tried PC world they have 10 metre max

Ive tried Aria in Manchester same as pc world.

Just wondering if anyone knows anywhere in Manchester/Liverpool or on the web.

https://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/catalog/ will prob do it. But I'd advise you to try changing your wireless channel from the default before you try anything else, if you haven't already. Especially if you're in a built up area.

Why not buy 1000ft of CAT5 cable, a crimper and some RJ45 plugs?

More initial outlay but worth it, and you can sell cables to people Laughing

What you suggest regards to wireless thing then?

I have a netgear Wireless router modem on the downstairs computer running Aol 8mb Broadband.

And my computer which is sat in a enclosed alcove as its built in neat and tidy but not practical wardrobes. With a Belkin usb adaptor.

Now the signal has to go from upstairs through wooden wardrobes, my bedroom brick wall, through the downstairs extension roof and into the router.

Thats why i thought wired would be better but im open to wireless answers too.

That cable looks good from the people posted, just how much are the RJ45 connecters ?

Pence. The crimp tool may cost a few quid, but I've got one you could borrow.

Are you only making one cable as I might have enough if you want it.

I think i need roughly 60/70 foot of cable! Maybe more. My Mum's bf says 180 ft, but seeing as Oblivion at Alton towers is 180ft high ( 80 foot what you can see above ground) it is nowhere near that distance!

Is it your wireless connection that states 1mb or your general download speeds.

You can also get USB extension cables, it might help if your adaptor was ina a more favourable place.

25m of cable is over 75 feet.......... Confused and you said you'd found 25m at Maplin. Sounds like that would do the job no problem........

I would suggest ethernet over wireless if you can be arsed, but you can't beat the convenience of wireless...

It's worth changing your channel to something other than the default as an intermediate fix. You can google the exact details of this as it depends on your router/wireless device. For most purposes wireless will be fine. In built up areas everyone tends to use the same channel (the default) so changing it can make a drastic difference to signal strength.

You can also try moving around your router/wireless device slightly; if I sit my laptop on my bed in one position, I get a signal strength of 25%; moving it an inch away from the corner and I get 85% through two floors!

Nothing wrong with Aol broadband. Its pretty much faultless, i only use its connection. Use firefox for browsing.

Going to get the 25 m cable tommorow. I think its roughly 60 ft i need and thats with a bit of excess.

I'll do the drilling so its all gravy.

Are you sure you are not mixing your measurments, your internet connection is measured in megabits, your network connection is measured in megabytes,

8 megabits = 1 megabyte

Sounds like your wireless connection is spot on.

but if you still want a big cable I can crimp you one up, think ive stil got a load of cat 5 in the shed.
