Has anyone done one of these course or know anything about them?

I got a letter from the company that I did my test with saying that I can do this 'Rider Plus' course for £99. I know that there is something similar for cars that gets you an insurance discount, is this simply the bike version of it. Confused

<slight thread hijack>

I would like to do an advanced riding course at some point (insurance discount or not, though would be nice Wink ).

Anyone got any suggestions/reccomendations etc on what the different ones are like, costs etc?

Hi G, I looked into this very recently as I'm planning on doing a lot of advanced training next year to improve my riding.

Bikesafe.co.uk seem pretty good and well recognised, I think you get an insurance discount as well, but I've not completely looked into this one as if I remember right it's quite a way from me.

Edge 44 is the Hampshire police course. It costs £60 and is very highly rated. Few hours of training with a cop. But the cop is off duty so it's very relaxed!! And if you think you wander around mirror signal lifesaver manouevre then your wrong! They'll run through basics of advanced riding and then concentrate on what you want to learn most at .... They've been well known to teach riders to get their knee down, and also we bumped into a cop and a GSXR on one of their trips out and he was teaching the bloke how to do powerslides and backing the bike in etc Shocked

Then theres the local bike training company. Most will do some half decent advanced training for a half decent fee. Best bet is go to one of them and see what they offer.

And then when your really into it there is the IAM. They most definetly have a group near you and are a club that has a few instructors, they base advanced riding techniques on normal weekend ride outs and socialising fun etc. Apparantly very good and it's a lasting club type thing so lots of friends made and social events etc. www.iam.org.uk

Thats a few of them, I'm probably not100% spot on so best to check their websites.

I did the Bikesafe one which was good fun and not bad for about £20. It's quite cool getting to ride out with the police bikes. That said it's not advanced training - just an observed ride. You get 10% insurance discount with Devitts and Carole Nash.

If you get in contact with IAM they will take you out for an observed ride for free, and tell you how much work you need to pass. I think maybe the training is free, as it is done by volunteers - you just have to pay their petrol cost. The final test is about £80 or something. I signed up for a ride-out at the NEC.

Whoever you take advanced training with, make sure that they are suitably qualified. I have to examine many of the Bikesafe instructors for the diploma and most have had no formal instructor training at all and the same applies with many of the IAM observers.

Next year the DSA is introducing a formal qualification that all advanced instructors must have before they can instruct and this will take about 70% of the current advanced instructors out of the equation.

I am not knocking anyone who attempts to improve rider safety, but there are a lot of unqualified bods out there who are instructing on the back of an IAM pass.

The only recognised advanced instructional qualification at the moment is the RoSPA diploma which is DSA and Btec level 3 and 4 accredited, and there are about 150 such qualified instructors around the country. If you phone RoSPA on 0121 248 2000 or go to www.rospa.org and they will send out a list of approved instructors, but please no one phone me as I am just about booked up for next year as it is.

The IAM test is equal to a RoSPA bronze grade whereas a RoSPA gold is equal to a civillian Police class 1 and there is a re-test requirement every three years (unlike the IAM) so your skills are kept in tune.

Funny you mention it. You can buy a whole load of stuff at the end of the course - which most didn't. You do get free a key ring and a couple of bikesafe stickers. I put the sticker right underneath my license plate. I figure if I get pulled over it could make the difference from getting points and letting me off with a warning! Laughing

I'd also like to do an advanced riding course after my test, but not for a few years yet.

The best time to do any advanced course is within a few months of passing your test. You will have a bit of confidence, you will still be receptive to new ideas and you will not have yet developed any major bad habbits, bearing in mind that 95% of what you learn for the L test goes straight out of the window at advanced level.

95% of what you learned for your test goes straight out the window the second you enter reality.

Riding back from the test centre, having passed, my instructor's already telling me to do things differently. Laughing
