Just been quoted 350 + Vat for a 9000 mile service on my 636. Is that a fair price?

Depends, what do they do for it? Personally I'd want a new engine and a blowjob thrown in for that kind of money.

Thats not actually that bad if hey are doig the valve clearences.

To do the valves on the 636 you have to remove the cams and partly dismantle the head, then swap expensive shims so it is a time consuming pain in the arse of a job.

Now on the other hand, my GSXR runs screw and locknut adjustment so i can adjust ine in 20 mins using a set of feeler guages.

The manual for the 636 says 24,000 miles for valve inspection.

Thumbs Up Thanks for the advice, yer i thought i remember you saying that Jo ill give them a call and see what they say. When i heard that price it put me of getting another bike if the running costs are going to be that much! I usually change my bike yearly so never encounter long running service costs but my next bike i will keep for a couple of years at least.

Seriously? That's a seriously good engine if it goes that long without required a valve check.

I would of thought that would be a major service, so oil & filter, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, valve clearances, fork oil, head bearing grease, brake fluid & coolant. £350+ for all that sounds about right, especially as they are a pig to work on which will make clearances difficult.

Yer it is a fair price as they would be doing that...... But having just looked at the owner's manual it dose not need a valve clearances until 26 000 Miles Razz

In that case why are they suggesting that they do it at 9? Is it time related too and they're going off time rather than mileage?

It is not time related in the manual it just sais after 26000 Miles. The guy i spoke to seemed to think it was after 9000 Miles. The thing is i know the garage well and they always give me a good price as i have been using them for over 5 years. Maybe that is the case fore some of the older sportsbikes.

If the valves don't need doing, why not service it yourself and save even more money?

Just out of interest was that the main Kawasaki dealer that qouted you that (i.e. the official Kawasaki franchise one)?

Also curious what the price would be roughly for the 7500 mile one as that's due now on mine.

Thumbs Up

Wow, do you reckon that's all what needs doing for the service? Shocked Been putting off phoning the dealer but might puck up the courage and do it in a minute. I don't mind spending a bit of money as obviously its a sportsbike so needs good maintenance. The bodywork is in v. good condition for the year so it'd be nice to have the mechanicals to the same standard (and also for piece of mind that nothings gonna fuck up when riding it).

Thats what i have been doing but its for sale and has only been serviced once, and allot of people seem to think it will blow up unless it has a couple of stamps in a book!

For my B1 the manual says at 7500 :

Inspect all cables , connections etc. Make sure everything is tight. Change oil & filter, obviously only if it hasn't been done in the last wee while. And lub everything up that needs it.

So simply it's maybe an hour or twos work at the most.

Checked in my manual (is 2005 model) and seems the same stuff covered. Phoned Kwak dealer and they qouted about £125-150.

Can't see any probs with me servicing it as the parts alone would prob come in well under £100 (might do brake pads as well as bike is over 2yrs old with original ones still on)

Only thing which bugs me is that if I ever sold the bike would the lack of 'official' dealer servicing stamps reduce the value? I would keep all the receipts if I did the servicing myself.

ZX6r's are very cheap 2nd hand.

Say you decide to sell it in 3 years.
Get a minor service on each of the 3 years costing up to £600.
A fully stamped bike will not be worth £600 more than a bike serviced at home.
