PostPosted: 00:41 - 18 Oct 2007    Post subject: Engine conversion, and DVLA? Reply with quote

Well, i like my Gilera ice and i want to keep it for a bit so im planing on doing a 125 conversion. the thing is i dont know how to go about it legally with the DVLA and was wondering if anyone had any ideas what needs to be done? They dont make Gilera ICE's with 125's so i dont know what to do, but i could manage to do the conversion.

I do have some questions if someone could help clear this up.

Would it make my insurance stupidly high, even though it will only be a 125cc scooter? and, would the DVLA want to check the conversion over their self? Some people said all i need to do is change the engine number on my log book?

any help on this is appreciated guys.

Thanks.

Hi

As far as the DVLA are concerned they just need to know the new capacity and the new engine number. There might be some issue with the plating of it as a moped, but the DVLA are not engineers and have no means to mechanically check the bike.

Your insurance company would certainly want to know, and the insurance might well be an issue. And you will kill the resale value of the bike.

All the best

Keith

Hi

You could do that I think. No idea if the DVLA will charge you (probably, they seem to charge as much as they can for everything these days).

All the best

Hi

How difficult is the conversion? Is it an easy conversion?

All the best

engine fits right in from an aprilla SR125 with a bit of a kick. biggest issue is the wiring loom, but thats possible too. so all in all, not hard at all. just time consuming.

Why not buy a spare loom to hack to bits so when you refit the old engine you can chuck the original loom back in?

You may have to get a single vehicle approval done. Could be wrong.
