Bike friendly? Or bike non-friendly?

Just wondering as there's a few Bus Lanes on my commute to work - am I "legally permitted" to filter into them?

Depends where you are really. Look on the local council's website for the area and it may provide the answer...

Also, each buslane should have a blue sign indicating hours of 'operation' and symbols for each vehicle allowed inside.

I use buslanes everyday that I'm not supposed to. The trick I've found is to keep one eye on which way the cameras (if there are any) are looking and dip back outside if they're on you. Otherwise I keep near the white line after hearing that they ignore you if you do this.

Also, don't let a bus follow you closely, some have cameras. Thumbs Up

Look for a motorbike on the blue sign. Still a grey area and not all local authorities allow it.

I use them. Shows cycles, but doesnt mention motorcycles. No bugger monitors them anyway.

If u get banned from riding a motorbike you are technically not allowed to ride a push bike either. Smile

And dont think for a second if they could away with putting a reg number and recording frame numbers of pushbikes they wouldnt do it, cos they would... Which would mean they could tax you, MOT you and insist on insurance. Smile

The rules for bus lanes are very simple - unless there's a motorbike symbol on the bus lane sign, you must not use it.

In London, there is a £120 fine for doing so - even just a little bit, as my mate discovered when they sent a nice photo of him and his 'bike in a bus lane.

Some towns and cities allow 'bikes in, others don't. Outside of London, bus lanes are not enforceable by cameras as the law is different.

I think, although I've not been able to confirm it, that if you're caught by a Police Officer then the fine is the same as for ignoring other traffic signs: £60 fine and 3 points.

I do it, but its not always helpful (I have found myself stuck whereas if I were filtering normally I would be continuing).

I'd say just look ahead and if you think your gonna get stuck behind the bus try move across to filter as normal. Cagers will very rarely let you out of a bus lane so if you end up behind a bus driver whos on a break or something can be hard to get out.

Oh and I know some areas don't allow it, Oxford doesn't but Swindon and Bristol do for example.

Really? Strange that, I thought you were only banned from driving a MOTOR VEHICLE!

Since when has a pedal cycle been classed as a motor vehicle?

Around here the bus lanes have been changed to 'no car lanes' which means alot of others including bikes and taxi's can use them.

They are not technically the same class of vehicle, one is a motor vehicle, the other is not, motor cycle, pedal cycle, one has an engin the othr does not, the only similarity is that they both have two wheels.

So even to the letter of the law, if a disqualified driver rides a pedal cycle, that is quite legal and therefore there is nothing to enforce.

However, if a small motorised engine was attached to the pedal cycle, it then becomes a motor vehicle different kettle of fish.

Sinclair C5 was very popular with disqualified drives because they could still drive them as they are not motor vehicles.

To be a motor vehicle it must hae an internal combustion engine as its means of propulsion.

Or to give itn its exact definition

Section 185(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988,

"Motor vehicle" is as a mechanically propelled vehicle intended or adapted for use on roads.

Section 87(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988,

It is an offence to drive on a road a motor vehicle of any class otherwise than in accordance with a licence authorising him drive a motor vehicle of that class.

Old joke, Rolling Eyes how about trying something new and funny!!! Shocked Look at the taxation class properly and you will see that it is a "Motor Bicycle" but the word bicycle is put on the disc because the full classification will not fit. Rolling Eyes
