Depends on the woman. If she doesn't have a licence, she shouldn't. Wink

There probably will be a time when it's physically impossible or at least uncomfortable to do so, but until then, I don't see why she should quit.

It would be more dangerous for her to be on the back seat really.
My ex was on the back and I had to be very careful changing gears and
when braking in case she would be forced forward and cause pressure
on the baby.
I don't think it would be a good idea for a heavily pregnant woman to
ride or be on a bike.

Paddy.

My liberal pro feminist principles say yes but the idea of a girl in her eighth month on a sports bike in mid winter makes my heart say no.

Personally, absolutely not, the risks of riding greatly outweigh those of driving and yes, surprisingly cooking Rolling Eyes

If I had riden whilst pregnant, had an off, and we are talking a minor off, the outcome could have been devastating, not something I could live with myself.

Then again my instructor rode up till 8 months gone, personal choice.

I think it would be irresponsible and not worth the risk.
Should i snort a line whilst pregnant? I witnessed this, made me sick. Sick

Personally if I was pregnant I would ride the bike for a couple of months but then at about 3 months I would give up biking and would probably sell the bike as you can't really take a new born baby on a bike.

Effectively it is the same as putting a baby on the bike with you, I dont think its safe or responsible, if some one hits you from behind at even 20 you are risking the life of that baby, if someone hits from behind in a car there is still a risk, but a smaller one.

I don't think a pregnant woman should ride a bike. I most certainly wouldn't.

It's similar to the reason for the advice a midwife gives you not to ride horses when preggers - because of the risk of falling from a height.

With a bike, if in an accident there is a high chance of internal abdominal injuries. The foetus wouldn't stand a chance.

It's not just heavily pregnant where there's risk - the first 3 months of pregnancy (often before even showing) are vital, many miscarriages happen in that time.

There is immense intricate development going on in there the first few months, and a hard fall then can be devastating.

Out of interest, do any of the posters who don't see a problem with it, have kids themselves?

I don't think they should.

They are carrying a human being in their punch bag, if they crash they could kill both.

ultimately, when you weigh up any risk, it's a question of balancing likelihood of badness against degree of badness, and being pregnant puts the 'degree of badness' side of the equation a fair bit beyond what most would consider reasonable.

As my mum did, in Botswana. Was caesarean section, so she wasn’t in labour at the time.

People are mentioning “what if you get hit from behind”. Not sure how well this would go in a car either with seatbelts, never mind airbags and the like.
I’ve never had a big problem landing on my gut after crashing a bike, but then I haven’t quite got to the stage of looking heavily pregnant (or at least not as proud of it as women in such a state generally are, so don’t show it off so much Razz ).

In the end, it’s perfectly possible to ride a bike defensively and avoid 99.99% of crashes other people might have.
That last .01%? Well, you’re probably already much more likely to hurt yourself tripping over at home.

I don't see what having kids has to do with understanding the risks you are taking.

As above, I'd say that it's perfectly possible to make riding a bike a safer activity than, say, going up a flight of steps. Yet do you see people being warned to stay on the ground floor of their house?

It's sad that even fairly dedicated bikers believe that biking has to be a dangerous activity.

I dont think its the biking that "has" to be dangerous.

But you cannot deny that a pregnant woman is taking a greater risk with the baby when on a bike than in a car.

That is obvious.

It depends how the bike and car are ridden/driven.

If both are ridden/driven well, I don't see why that should be the case. Or, if it were, the difference in risk to be so small that it's not worth considering.

It would be obvious if it was true, but i dont think its true.

I dont think one outweighs the other, I think that every individual situation is different, no matter what the hell youre driving/riding.

A big metal box around you will make it safe in some situations, but so does common sense and a little forward thinking/planning.

Anyways, back off the tangent, back to subject.

I really dont know what to think, Id say it would be completely upto the woman in question.

EDIT: Snap, G

My ex rode on the back of my bike twice while pregnant. 2 days later she miscarried.

I cant help but thing that riding on the bike had something to do with it.

In my experience, riding on the back of a bike you get a lot more forces transmitting vertically through than you do as the rider, where the suspension is designed to work for you much better.
