Depends on what bike and how you ride it.
Some times I do a good work out when out for a ride.

Not sure about the arms thing but tis true you burn an extra 100 calories or so worth per hour riding a bike.

Whether it's exercise or not is debatable though

It is of a sort, not that you'd have massive arms even spending most of your wakeing hours on the road..

Holding your core straight against wind blast, leaning arround, shifting your weight about, there are muscles you simply dont use anywhere but on a bike (ever notice on a new bike your muscles ache sometimes when you first get it, but after a while it goes?)
Muscluar endurance would go up in them concerned but actual hypertrophy (growing larger) i can't really see.

Enduro or offroad bikeing is a very different matter, ard work!

Interesting thought though. I would defenitely say it burns allot more calories than driveing, being out in the cold air allone will do that. I'd defenitely choose it over a step class or similar Laughing

when you get a new bike your body takes the toll, and i believe that riding hard and fast is when you exercise the most, my arms are big and i dont think they are, and i havent done weights in yrs so i put it down to using them alot on the fzr and i get tired faster with a pillion.
its not overly calore burning but it must provide some exercise.
must also be down to riding posistion and how much you interact with the bike, if puttin arount at 30 then less likely to have an effect if its higher say 50-90 then you work with the bike more,
its late, and thats whats coming out my head,
nite...

I've noticed a distinct improvement in muscle tone since returning to riding a year ago, not necessarily exercise but certainly toning.

Does the muscles down the back of your neck a world of good.

I wonder if it has something to do with how your pillion rides? When my gf came out for her first run on the twisties on the back of my VFR (we'd done a fair bit of A-road stuff previously) and we started riding a little enthusiastically, I had to pull over after about 20 minutes. Every time I braked hard she was leaning against my back so I was essentially having to bench-press our combined upper body weight under G against the handlebars.

I pulled over and explained about how she should be gripping my hips with her legs and I in turn grip the tank with mine under hard braking.

If you're doing it right, your arms shouldn't be taking any load at all other than the force it takes to turn the bars.

Mind you, the gf did comment that her legs felt like she'd just been to the gym after a fairly long ride.

In my personal experience a long hoon constitutes a very good work-out and I see direct evidence of it. Thumbs Up

Very slightly.

If you want decent exercise, get into off roading. More fun too Smile.

i would of thought you would of agreed since you have to get the bike to corner when doing 90+ into bends G. but then again you should already be in perfect health to keep weight down and to last a race.
i agree off roading is fun, i wish i never quit when i was little.

Possibly exercise if you don't do it regularly.

If you do it more regularly your body becomes efficient at that particular movement and it becomes about as good as walking. So any benefits would only be short term. Don't think you constitute it as a good workout. Laughing

Cornering at 90mph + should take very little effort when done properly. Hanging off the bike shouldn’t need much strength and nor should counter-steering into a turn.
What can take a lot of effort which is linked to track riding a lot more is braking hard into the corner.

A lot of force is taken through the arms doing this; if you’re already hanging off you may not be able to very well brace yourself with your knees.
Generally you want to start hanging off before braking so as not to unsettle the bike, though you can often still grip the tank with knees to some degree.

Of course I should be in perfect health and that’s one of my excuses for not winning races Razz (the not great level of fitness has got even worse with 4 months sitting on me arse too.)

Naked bikes do provide a workout as you have to brace yourself against the force of the wind. You will probably find this most in your neck and arm muscles as you hold the rest of your body upright against the wind.

If your bike has a fairing, then you will not have to hold your body against the wind and will not get so much of a workout.

If you have to move or push the bike, this will also give you a bit of a workout (although pushing the bike for 3 miles because you ignored the fuel light will not impress the girlfriend)

I've noticed a distinct improvement in upper-leg strength from track day riding; having to support my body off the side of the bike on my legs initially used to make them ache like buggary but now it's not anywhere near as bad!

Moto-x is supposed to be hard on the body.

Your heart rate will shoot up and stay up for the full time after start. And your obviously moving around a lot more.
