Thankyouplease.

i dont really know but when i filter i normally go to the other side to get a good view and will prevent hitting a person crossing from behind a car that you cant see, just a tip for newbies.

General stance seems to be as long as it is safe for you to do it, without breaking road rules (solid white line as an example) then it is okay. It does increase the risk, car's doing a u-turn, car driving getting Huffy etc etc.

I have only filtered a hand full of times, those times being down the prom in blackpool as illuminations were on and the speed of traffic was 5mph.
Also at a roundabout when the left lane was backed up for ages and i was going straight on, if i couldnt turn off i would have gone right round the roundabout

Edit
I am a new biker though. Smile

Filtering is 100% legal however thou shall not straddle or cross over solid central white lines, overtake after a No Overtaking sign, overtake the lead vehicle within the confines of the zig-zags of a pedestrian crossing, cause danger or force other vehicles to alter course or speed.

I think Smile

i dont think there is any referece in the highway code about filtering but there is about overtaking which in revelance is the same.

165
You MUST NOT overtake

if you would have to cross or straddle double white lines with a solid line nearest to you (but see Rule 129)
if you would have to enter an area designed to divide traffic, if it is surrounded by a solid white line
the nearest vehicle to a pedestrian crossing, especially when it has stopped to let pedestrians cross
if you would have to enter a lane reserved for buses, trams or cycles during its hours of operation
after a ‘No Overtaking’ sign and until you pass a sign cancelling the restriction
[Laws RTA 1988 sect 36, TSRGD regs 10, 22, 23 & 24, ZPPPCRGD reg 24]

reference from CLICKY

Hope that helps

Also in the same vein there is no law to say you can.

Manoeuvring. You should be aware of what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring. Look behind you; use mirrors if they are fitted. When in traffic queues look out for pedestrians crossing between vehicles and vehicles emerging from junctions or changing lanes. Position yourself so that drivers in front can see you in their mirrors. Additionally, when filtering in slow-moving traffic, take care and keep your speed low.

I get confuzzled with filtering and tho's white lines.

I read the Highway code to some extent Embarassed

Is there 2 sets of white diagonal lines?

1) diagonal lines touching the outer lines
2) diagonal lines in line with the out side lines - but not touching

Im really am naive to this - I only filter if safe to do so - but through Worthings main A27 strech I filter, with many other bikers over white diagonal lines that arnt touching the outerlines.
Maybe I should go back to the HWC book Embarassed

All legal, just do what ^^ people up there have said ^^

Also when referring cases in court it was usually the bikers in the 'wrong' but not too long ago the biker won the case so theres more of a chance for us.

Close...

There are two different kinds of hatched marking - those with a solid border and those with a dashed border.

Rule 130 of the Highway Code says:

Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.

* if the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so

* if the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency

Its not illegal, as long as you dont do it dangerously, or as said before do it in areas where the road markings or signs say not to overtake - but generally in those areas, those markings are there for a good reason and you need to be on your toes to get past safely.

Ive found police dont really care, as long as your not stupid, take your time and dont cause a hazard for other road users.
