Well two roundabouts actually, one after the other. Luckily it was a nice dry day so I saw the spill as I got onto the roundabout (although I did think it was water at first as there's been a lot of patches of water whilst I've been out and about today) and slowed down, then as I got to it I could smell the bloody stuff.

Front end went a bit Shocked but I was already slow & fairly upright so I managed to hold onto it and just kept going. Was expecting the second lot (which was smaller anyway) so again nice and slow and managed to pretty much avoid it this time.

Tempted to go out in the car now & see if I can follow the trail (it went onto our local ind estate) and find anyone to shout at........ Evil or Very Mad

Sand isn't that renowned for grip either...

Phone the local police, they'll know who to contact

Well glad you ok Thumbs Up

1st encounter for me was a roundabout - Was quite hard to tell the difference between the new layed tar of if it was in fact diesel.
By the time I tried to figure it out, I was over the stuff - Yes diesel back end slid, but I must of just 'clipped' the oily stuff and managed to stay up right Thumbs Up

Ah Colin, if only I kept some sand or cement dust handy on my bike (or even at home) for just such an occasion........ Sad Rolling Eyes

I did go back out in the car, but was unable to trace where the spill came from or went as it appeared to just be on the 2 roundabouts. So I reported it to the local police, who were spectacularly uninterested. Evil or Very Mad

Have also tried my local council and the Highways Agency, none of whom appear to answer their phones after 5pm on a Saturday.

So, anyone in the Warrington area please be careful on the middle 2 roundabouts of Woolston Grange Ave for a while.

Incidentally, how long does it take diesel to no longer be a danger on the road? When we went back in the car you could still see the stain but it wasn't wet like it had been when I went past on the bike, and it didn't smell any more. Confused I thought this might mean it was safe now but Himself reckons it will come back next time it rains and be just as lethal, is this right?

Move slightly more North - the police round Garstang normally sort diesel spills out pretty soon after being told.

Call the council because its their job to clean it up. Plus if someone reports it... and then someone else has an accident on it, they become liable.

If you attempt to clean it up yourself with cement dust or sand you are opening yourself up for prosecution I would imagine.

It doesn't evaporate like petrol does, it stays for a loooong time. It requires a torrential rainstorm to wash it away, but a little drizzle will float the diesel out of the cracks in the asphalt and back to the surface again, creating a lovely ice rink effect.

Bloody dangerous stuff, diesel is.

Diesel completely threw me off the once, Pulled away from a set off lights going right at a cross road a bit lively (and low), didn't even notice the diesel untill after sliding down the road on my arris watching my bike sort of spin down the road towards the curb.

Not i hint of concern from people sat at the red lights next to me, as i hobled over to me bike, picked it up checked it over and carried on my merry way, ended up changing the silencer because of the scratches but nothing else luckily.

It gets worn off the tyre pretty quickly. Just be careful for the next few corners.

Don't forget to support Killspills on their next rally, this thread proves it's importance.

I was in Whitehall yesterday protesting against road pricing and congestion charging.

Give your tread a good scrub with hot soapy water and rinse it off. After the water shouldn't bead on the rubber and it's clean.

I followed a trail of diesel/oil once to see who it was. After about 30 miles riding round back roads in the Trossachs I came up behind a vintage car rally. I mean REALLY vintage cars, wooden wheels and suchlike.

Given how a lot of the engines on those cars run a total-loss oiling system, I decided to leave it. The only way for them to not drop oil on the road is to not drive them. I'd rather people kept stuff like that going.

Glad you are ok Babyyam, nasty stuff is diesel.
I used to work in a petrol station, it was a b4stard to clean up and my last boss used to say that it didn't matter, it would evaporate!! WTF it stays there, unlike petrol which will evaporate! We used to put sand down to absorb some of it, shovel that away then scrub the forecourt with very hot soapy water and brush the water down the drainage grills and hope that it had all gone.
