Hi

I know you splashed out on a set, but even that decent set has a few melted bits. I mean get several sets. They are going to be near unobtainable soon, at which point engines will be 10 a penny.

All the best

guad with a stupid 1300 engine in it turbo'd and nos'd to the max and a longer wheel base or weigh it down on th front! now that would be the sex, slow in the corners though.
anymore suggestions on performance for my fzr? i saw a 3tj race bike that pumped out 80bhp same as the fzr600 engine.

That is actually pretty cheap for a 1 off. That is the kind of price to expect for a kit fitted already developed, where they can split the development costs between a couple of dozen customers. A one off I would not be surprised at triple that as a final cost once everything is settled

Not heard of anyone bothering to turbo an R6. Most people would just say to buy an R1 as it would be about as fast and a hell of a lot cheaper.

All the best

Keith

thats a supercharger kit for the r6.

your only real problem is that you have carbs, and could never get either a turbo or a supercharger running smoothly on your bike,
if you were to convert it to fuel injection, then that would be a different story,
i don't think it would be particulary hard to do a supercharger, for a bike, its just the fuelling that would make me think twice,
i would give it a go if my bike didnt have those damn fiddly carbs Very Happy

thats who i got the quote off, and i thought that £4000 was a decent price, i suspect that would be paying for alll the mapping and low comp pistons and fitting etc.

Hi

Based on the Big CC Racing kit prices, £4k would get you a basic kit that would work on an unopened engine (just using high octane fuel).

Set of Wiseco pistons would be £500 on their own. Turbo would be say £600. Plenum chamber quite possibly the same again, and again for the turbo manifolds. So that is over half the £4k gone before you even pay any labour or touch the carbs, let alone the loads of minor bits you will need (higher pressure fuel pump, intake pipes, intercooler, reprogrammable ignition).

You can use carbs with a turbocharger or supercharger. They need to be sealed, venting to the plenum chamber (or you could just put the carbs totally within the plenum chamber, an idea used by Maserati on the Biturbo which made adjusting the carbs a nightmare).

Get it wrong (compression, jetting, ignition timing, etc) and you will be paying for several sets of pistons (and quite possibly another turbo depending on where the remnants of the pistons go).

Put it this way, you are surprised their rough idea of price is so high. I am surprised it is so low.

By the way, find someone who already has the TTS conversion you are interested in and chat to them about how successful it was and how much playing round it took to get working.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Couldn't find anything on there about a turbo 400, although plenty of threads on turboing the 600 (generally ending as "don't bother").

Nitrous oxide is a cheap bolt on bit of power, but still stresses the hell out of the engine. Turbo is not cheap and stresses the hell out of the engine.

Realistically the best option is to slot in a 600 engine. Even a Thundercat engine should fit pretty easily. Early 600 engine should just bolt in to all the existing engine mounts and give you a real 20hp or so straight away.

If you want to go beyond that then yes you can start to tune it. Cams, bored out (Thundercat engine has plated bores so if you use one of those engine then the costing of boring it out will be far higher), port the head, lighten the crank, raise compression, etc. But the FZR bottom end is not strong so budget on some decent replacement rods.

Either way the amount you would be spending would likely be far more than the value of the bike.

All the best

Keith

You have got to be realistic about this xlonewolfx. £4000 for a basic kit is a good price but I can tell you from experience by the time you have finished it will be 1.5-2x that, plus 2 years down the road when you still haven't got a roaworthy reliable bike and have spent more than the cost of a new 'busa you'll be absolutely kicking yourself.

Then when you've finished the bike will still be worth less than 2 grand re-sale.

For £4k you can buy a mint early model 'busa and have change. IT will still be faster and more powerful than your turbo bike and you won't be able to blow it up let-alone have to worry about going 10 miles.

I;m pretty handy with the spanners & make all my own fabricated parts an still managed to take a whole year the 1st time I turbocharged my bike (And I had plenty of info to help me along). This secon kit has now almost taken me 2 years and close-on 7.5 grand so far and I'm not finished yet. Whereas I can buy turbo parts for my bike off the shelf, anything you need would have to be custom made, which means waiting - any paying - lots!

That's not to say it cannot be done, because there's a guy in the Isle of Man who drag-races a FZR400 turbo, just be realistic about timescale and cost is all I'm saying, for it will be a very long and very painful process Wink

There was a guy in last months bike magazine who had a supercharged FZ6. He got TTS performance to build it from scratch and it cost £4500.

However, in the same article, there is a bit about a Big CC Gixxer thou.

Big CC basically say, if you have a slow bike, sell it and buy a faster one. If you have a fast bike, they can make it faster.

They also say there is no point matching a small turbo to a bike engine, because bike engines are so revvy anyway. They say that Turbo lag is not an issue, because bikes have a huge surge of power at high revs. you don't want the power at low revs anyway as it becomes impossible to control.

Big CC say for a 1300cc Hayabusa, you need the same size turbo as a 3.5l car due to the busa revving more and having the same volume of air passed as the 3.5l lump in the lower revving car.

You also have to remember if you were to turbo an old FZR 400, you'll need to upgrade the brakes, possibly wheels to fit decent tyres, suspension, strengthen the frame...

you might as well have developed your own bike from scratch after all that.

meh looks like no turbo for the fizzer then, probs just blueprint the engine to pump up horses and reliability. it seems more worthwile as i'm keepin the bike anyway.
the whole idea was to make the bike faster with the fzr400 engine but if reliability is in question then it wouldnt be worth it, i can imagine shellin out then 100 miles later a rod being thrown through the side.

Lot of expense for a project that would most likely blow itself to pieces before you got it out of the shop..

Depends on your application, and what you want from the bike.

If you are looking for 4-500HP then yes you need a big turbo but if you want modest power on a stock engine there's no need to go for such a large unit. My 1st turbo would have been ideal for a 1.8 Nissan Pulsar and was good for 300HP on the 'busa which is about the most you can put through a stock-component 'busa engine regularly. It was ideal for the spirited road rider because it spooled fast and with little loa on the engine but might not have suited a more relaxed riding style.

If you fit too-small a turbo unit you bike will be a handful to ride always wheelying and run out of steam at high revs meaning you'll have to short-shift or risk spiralling intake charges and turbine backpressure as you run the turbo into the choke-zone. Bad for everything.

Using a bigger turbo at lower boost will make the same or more power, with less stress on the engine but with later spooling. There's always a trade-off you just have to look at twhat you want from the bike.
