i wouldnt as the bone will be very weak so if he hits a bad bump it could break again.
i would of done what the hospital or gp said and let it heal.

I was just wondering what the legal situation would be if he got stopped, he does still have a bit of restricted movement but he can use the brake lever without any problems...

Thats a fair point ariel but it isnt a knob pimple in this case its his right wrist which he was told not to ride by the hospital... does this matter or is it merely a recommendation?

Well its upto him to make his own risk assessment I guess. The bone in a fracture heals very rapidly and using the effected part, albeit not too strenuously, assists the healing process. That being said the doctors place casts on for a specified length of time because in their opinions the bone will take about that length of time to heal to a level in which it can be used fully. I don't think steady riding will be too harsh on his wrist, but heavy braking where all his body weight will transfer through his wrists towards the front of the bike could be painful and may result in further damage to the fracture or the tendons which will have shrunk and tightened due to his wrist being imobile.

The legal side really wouldn't come into play unless, god forbid, he was involved in a very serious RTA and the reasons for it could be placed on the injury, it would have to be proved that the accident was preventable had his wrist not been injured.

I have rode with...
Broken toes.
Stitched up arm (26 stitches)
A smashed knee that I needed a stick to walk with.
Ebow that needed regular steroid shots.
Broken fingers
Damaged knee that I needed to use a stick tied to gear change with to change gears.
Just do not get lifted by the cops.

Well he's not in a full body cast. If he doesn't feel safe then he shouldn't be out. Sounds a bit daft doing it so soon but only he can judge; unless he get done for running someone down that is! Laughing

His decision in the end as others have said.

I broke my wrist and every bone across my hand a few years back, and had a few pins inserted. The follow up appointment was lost in the post, so I went back a few months later (after no obvious pain) and the pins had moved; my hand had healed in the wrong way, and I'm in constant pain ever since.

I wouldn't fuck about with broken bones for the sake of a weeks riding to be honest, and I think pulling it off a week early after (presumably) wearing it for a good few months is pretty stupid.

Mind you, the medics are generally pretty unhelpful when it comes to letting you know this sort of stuff. When I got the pins out of my wrist I asked when I could ride my bike again, the reply was a flippant "If you never ride one again it'll be too soon for me.".

Changed their tune when I turned up for my first physio appointment in my leathers carrying a helmet. After they finished going apeshit they gave me a more sensible answer of "When you can touch your little finger with your thumb.".

I don't know how the hell they thought I was going to attend an out-patient clinic in rural Aberdeenshire without riding my bike though. Nearest bus stop was a six mile walk away and I didn't have a car.

Ins might not cover him if hes involved in an accident regardless of if it had anything to do with his wrist or his fault.

They will find any way they can to get out of paying out.

I think the issue would be more, if someone from work saw him riding his bike and reported it back to work... They may want to know why he's fit enough to ride his bike, but not be back at work.

How long ago did he break his wrist, then? My doctor recommended I avoid 'contact sports' for 12 weeks after breaking mine. I was back on the bike after 6, and the physiotherapist told me to do exactly what I'd been doing as my healing was bang on, if not ahead of, target. I've just had to be very careful and alert while riding — something which pays off anyway.

I have a plate and pins in mine. I'm not sure how differently you should treat a closed reduction/cast.
