was in halfords today and saw that they've got the xmas specials in.

got halfords professional 100pc socket set, pro screw driver set, spanner set and tool chest on rollers for £250.

now to me that sounds like a bargain, there pro range is top notch stuff (including a lifetime guarentee).

i also got a tool box from halfords socket set, screwdrivers, long nose plier, wire cutters, grips, and one of them funky screwdrivers with replaceable tips oh and allen keys for £50. There not the best made tool but its good for the money. I'm sure there was a post about it a month or so back.

Thumbs Up

edit: but there isn't a socket for spark plugs which was a bit gay.

Yes i do.when i say a set of sockets for about £3 i dont mean brand new cheap recycled from beer cans schite,i mean decent quality used ones that have probably sat in someones shed for a good few years.

I found snap on sockets to be no different than any other of my tools, both have snapped on me.

the problem is not everybody is like you , ie have 15+ bikes which regularly require work on. Like when you took the cush drive off the Bros last year how many people have such a big erm puller as that?.

I often need a tool which I need to use once and once only, of course I'm going to choose the cheaper one, I even improvise, what ? , but a £2 giantic allen key for my NTV forks? , sack that (get a couple of nuts put them onto a bolt tighten them up and hey presto you have yourself a tool) yer guilty of this yourself! with NTVs needing a special tool to change the head race bearings.

Rolling Eyes

Yes actually. There's a fair amount of clearouts there selling old socket sets and tools that were made when things were actually *made* properly, and also in this country. Not cheap shite that looks flash and is imported for pennies.

So Rolling Eyes to you too.

Having been a pro mech for about 30 years I can tell you that SnapOn stuff breaks a lot more often than the "cheap shit". SnapOn is the Harley Davidson of the tool world, over priced & under performing. I absolutely refuse to buy the stuff.

I have very few Snap-on and none that I have paid for as in the UK they are VERY over-priced and when they do break you have to deal with some fat salesman who doesn't want to deal with you to get them replaced.

I use mainly Facom as they have the same warranty, don't over charge and never quibble over warranties.

My point was a SET of sockets at £3 are not the same quality as a set where each socket will cost £3 such as Britool (although quality has dropped since they are now made in China) Sykes Pikavant, Halfords, Facom etc and anyone who believes they are is off their nut.

The tool market in the UK has opened up considerably in the last few years and it's perfectly possible to buy good quality cheap tools. There's no longer a need to buy £3 tat from a car boot sale when you can walk into any machine mart and buy a set of sockets and a ratchet with a lifetime warranty for £20.

I see what your getting at,but i still get just as good from the car boot sales as i would from machine mart but less than a 1/4 of the price.

I bought a 30 or so piece socket(with ratchets/reducers/extensions e.t.c.) set from a boot sale a few years ago called king dick Laughing ,it come in its own big steel carry case so i use it a lot (instead of lugging my heavy tool box everywhere).Cant remember exactly but i paid about £5 at most for it.never let me down once.

You got lucky. Have a look on the the King Dick website, you will be surprised just how much their kit costs.

How many sets of King Dick tools get sold for a £5 compared to how many sets of chocolate metal for £3?

You got lucky, you didn't know what you were buying.

For someone who uses tools occasionally, cheap tools are quite satisfactory, as long as you don't punish them.

I've had only one socket on a cheap Draper socket and wrench fail. It was partly my fault for trying to force a smaller socket onto a slightly rounded bolt in an attempt to loosen it. It expanded slightly and is now useless. I wouldn't use them on seized bolts and nuts though.

My 1/2'' 28 to 210 NM torque wrench from Argos cost less than £15 (and is built like a weapon of war) while the Halfords equivalent costs £60. It is not critical for me if the Argos wrench is slightly less accurate, considering the torque range it is going to be used in. I overtorque most items in this range slightly to err on the side of caution.

I have just ordered a smaller 1/4'' 5 to 25 NM torque wrench on eBay which cost £25, and comes with a calibration certificate, and it will be rechecked by the company 6 months after purchase. The Halfords equivalent costs £50, and to my knowledge will not be rechecked.

I've had the screw that holds the chuck onto a hand drill shear off on a cheap drill (cost less than£10) after 2 years of moderately severe abuse. It can easily be repaired by tapping the remaining portion and replacing it with a new screw, but I just cant be bothered, so I got another one. I am not sure if high quality drills would be guaranteed to be entirely problem free for the same period.

I have more than two dozen other cheap hand and power tools randing from air compressors to hand files that have been entirely problem free.

If you do not use tools professionally, you can end up paying for quality that you don't necessarily need. Having said that, there is some crap being sold which most mechanically people would be able to spot fairly easily. We are incredibly lucky that we live in an age where we are spoilt for choice and affordability, and it would make sense to make the most of it. Thank god for Chinese manufaturing. Razz
