I forgot how to do that special paste thing in office where it updates the data in other files. Anyone know how?

Don't know about anyone else, but I have no idea what you mean, can you explain it a bit better?

In office programs there is a "Paste Special" under the "Edit" menu, I assume you don't mean this?

Embarassed Sorry was typing in a hurry.

I know there is a way to paste data for example from excel into word, so that when you change the data in the excel file it automatically changes the data in the word file. I remember it involved using the 'paste special' function which is in the edit menu.

Okay.

Copy the thing from excel you want to be automatically updated in Word, using the normal copy procedure (ctrl-c)

In Word, click Edit and select Paste Special.

Chage the radio button from "Paste" to "Paste link" and hit OK.

When the Excel sheet is updated, it will now automatically update in Word.

You feeling thirsty? Well here's another one.

When I try and do copy and paste 'multiple selections' I.e. odd cells scattered around it won't let me copy or if it does it copies more than I selected.
eg. Try and copy and paste A13+14 and C13+14. It if works it will include column 'B' which I don't want.

Click A13, whilst holding control, click A14, C13 and C14.

This highlights the cells you require, you should then just be able to copy as usual.

Is this what you mean?

Ah bugger, that doesn't help you at all, I properly see what you mean now!

I'll look around for a bit for you, seems a bit stupid it won't let you do that.

OK, I found a way to do it, but it's a bit crude.

For instance, if you want to copy a19+a20 with c19+c20, you could:

set cell A30 to =a19
set cell A31 to =a20

set cell B30 to =c19
set cell B31 to =c20

Then copy a30:b31 into word using the "paste link" thing.

Then, in excel set cells a30:b31 to foreground colour white.

Now, changing cell c19 will change what is in word. (the first time you do this it will set the text to be white in Word, set it to "black" and it'll be fine for whenever it is changed again)

If you can't make any sense of that (not many poeple can make sense of me), let me know and I'll show you in excel somehow. Smile
