I was riding my R6 home from my dad's today and about 4 miles from home my clutch decided to stop working. I managed most of the way in top gear and had to down shift without the clutch Neutral . I hope this hasn't damaged the gear box too much!

Anyway, when I pull the lever the cable pulls on the bit near the clutch cover but doesn't disengage the clutch. I'm suspecting springs at the moment, but some input would be useful. Also how easy it would be to do myself or whether it would be best to pay for it to be done.

Many thanks

Forget the exact set up of an R6 clutch.
However, springs going would normally see the clutch slipping, not locked - the springs hold the clutch together.

Should be easy to take apart, though you may need an impact wrench to get the actual clutch basket apart.

You can do it by laying the bike over a bit so it doesn't spill any oil (think the r6 clutch is quite high anyway).
At least you should be able to get the cover off and have a look to see if anything's wrong.

Check the splines on the shaft that goes into the clutch casing to see if
they are worn out.

Paddy.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I don't have a garage or a van so I think I may have to pay to get it checked out. I can always get it dropped back to my dad's to work on it. I'll let you know the outcome.

I've swapped a clutch out on the street outside a bike garage (who was lending us the use of an air wrench). We just put some wood under the wheels to get enough angle to not lose any oil.

Do you know if somebody has been inside the clutch cover before? If that bike has >20000 miles on it the answer is probably yes.

Anyhoo, it's got a very odd mechanism in there where the two halves of the clutch are pulled apart (as opposed to pushed, which is the normal case). To do that, there's a short little rack-and-pinion mechanism in there, which, if it's not been put together properly (spot the invisible alignment mark on it) could pop out. That, at a guess, would stop the clutch from working very nicely indeed. I'd imagine you feel no real resistance on the clutch lever.

It's a bear to put back together even if you know where the alignment mark is - don't do it without a manual.
