would i be able to get away with saying i've got fully comp insurance, so i can ride it away straight away?

Or am i being naive?

I know its probably a silly idea, but i'm up for taking the risk.

what difference does the level of insurance make? If you aren't insured on the bike you're taking, then you're open to get done for riding without insurance. I'm certain the dealership would have no qualms about letting you ride the bike, after all they are taking your money.

However, lets say you had fully comp insurance on your current bike. And lets say you were old enough for the insurance company to offer you cover on any bike... You would still not be insured on the bike from the dealer, as there is a clause in your insurance that says that you can only ride someone elses bike if it is already insured by them. This doesn't mean dealership insurance.

Sorry, either way you're fooked unless you phone an insurer and take out insurance on the bike that you are buying.

And personally I wouldn't take the risk of riding a bike home from a dealer uninsured. Wave2k tried this, and was very nearly done for riding without insurance. He only got away with it because the bloke he bought the bike off of was a private seller, and still had the bike insured, which means his "any bike" policy actually did cover him.

Don't risk it, shiney new bikes aren't worth the hassle of being done for not having insurance. Not to mention if you had an accident and were liable, that would open a whole new can of worms.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Once you've paid for it and ownership is transferred you could say what the hell you like, they are probably not in the least concerned what you do with your property.

Maybe i was a bit confused.

When i bought my first bike, privately, my mate rode it home for me as he has fully comp insurance, so i assumed everything was ok.

Maybe it ain't worth the risk. The dealership is only 4 miles away from my home though, but i guess anything could happen within the first few metres.

Maybe i could push it Very Happy

When I bought my new 'bike in May I had to send the insurance certificate to the dealer so they could put a tax disc on it for me.

Insurance is the one thing your vehicle must have before going on the road. Everything else (MoT, registration number and tax) is permitted in certain circumstances.

If you were to be stopped you are likely to have the 'bike seized and possibly destroyed. And you get to pay for it's removal, storage and disposal as well as a fine for no insurance.

It really isn't worth the risk. If you can't afford insurance, why are you buying the 'bike?

All because you have fully comp insurance doesn't mean you automatically have insurance on any vehicle.

Common myth though.

I think they only ask for details of insurance on new bikes really; so that they can get tax etc sorted, which I think is needed for the general 'on the road' stuff.
I've never seen anyone being asked regarding a second hand bike.

As mentioned above, it is of course naughty and carries a fair bit nastier possible consequences than stuff like minor speeding, etc.

Or if you're definitely buying it you will need to insure it anyway so why don't you just arrange insurance to start on the day you want to pick it up? Confused

In the words of a salesman when I ask if I needed to produce insurance documents for them before collecting the bike -

"Once you signed the documents, payed us the money and get on the bike - its not our problem - you can do what ever the hell you want with it"

Top bloke, was able to get it home and get insured on it a couple of days later when Id been paid. Thumbs Up

Admitted, I live within a mile of every single bike shop in my city Mr. Green

Some policies allow you to drive a vehicle from its previous address to yours on the day that the ownership legally changes, allowing you to bring it home, but that'll be hidden very deep in the small print. Pretty handy though.

If you are getting bike on finance then you need to prove insurance, they would need to see your insurance if they are putting tax on it for you, but it doesn't need to be fully comp for that.

IMO if you ride the bike out of the shop without any insurance you are a fool, what would happen if you crashed the thing on the way home, hitting someone or a car, you would be up shit creek without a paddle Shocked

Get a quote and reference number, buy the bike and when you're getting kitted out ring them up and get the cover to start.

When I picked up the FZR I just sat outside the guys house with the bike and rang the insurance company and with the 7R I rang them minutes before leaving to collect the bike.

Think I bought a bike off the same bloke!

Is there any reason your not taking out the insurance before you pick up the bike? If your short of cash why not pay monthly then you only need pay a small deposit to get your cover.

If you cant afford a months insurance payment you probably shouldnt be picking up a new bike.

No point taking the risk!

I'm guessing it's more because he doesn't want to take the insurance out in case the sale falls through or something?

I was in this position with my XR125... I went to the shop who had 2 identical XR's, only difference was the mileage. Decided to buy the more expensive one with less miles and so went away to come back with my bike as part-ex the following day, (I was in my car at that time).
Sorted out insurance for a month on the bike I wanted to buy, took a cover note and turned up at the shop with my old bike and did the deal. Only when it came to paying for the bike and getting the service history did I notice that the mileage didn't make sense... further digging showed the clock had been swapped at some point and the bike had done more miles that stated. Pointed this out to the garage owner who was very apologetic that he hadn't noticed and he offered the bike to me for the same price as the cheaper one. I declined and decided to buy the cheaper one instead, went through with the deal and rode it home.
As soon as I got home I realised I hadn't been insured on the bike because I changed which bike I was buying - at the time the insurance thing didn't even occur to me! Thankfully I was able to change the reg number online and have the bike I bought insured straight away afterwards... lucky though since I had a 20mile ride home from the garage uninsured!! Sick

Round here, the local shops won't let you ride off without proving you're insured. Norwich union do free 7 days insurance (for cars anyway not sure on bikes though) with dealerships etc. so you can take your vehicle away. The hope is that you'll simply renew with them after a week rather than shopping around for cheaper insurance.

Goat-Boy neglected to bring his insurance with him when picking up his SV 650, so we had a few runs between his house (arse end of town) to the dealers (top end) to do... Smile
