www.parkers.co.uk

theres a list on there.

However, for you to insure any car at 17, even with a pass plus, will cost a grand. And it won't cost much more to go up to group 4 or 5, so you can insure a 1.3 or 1.4, which would be considerably nicer to drive.

I think this is advice that everyone on here will offer you, shop about!

I got a quote for £535 fully comp for a group 3 car with no full licence, had provisional since I was 17 though. 24 now. They took that into account. Dont know why.

All the other places I tried for the same car were more, £700, £850 and even £1300.

Shop about, take your time over it (if you have the time).

Are you serious about it'll cost a grand for a 17yr old to insure a cheapo motor like a mini, metro, nova, fiesta etc? i guess it depends on where you live, but jesus if insurance is that steep on average for new/young drivers these days, then its not really surprising that there are so many kids riding round in uninsured vehicles! To pay 50% of your cars value to get insurance is steep, but it could depend on the type and performance of the vehicle i suppose, and what your priorities are, but why the hell anyone would even contemplate paying say £1500 to insure a car worth a third of that is rediculous. I mean for me that would be the reason enough to not even bother with a car, and people say that bike insurance is crazy these days.

Hi

Suspect in some safe areas you might get it down to about £800 for tpft for a 17 year old on a group one car (if you can find a group 1 car, Fiat Panda is the only one I can think of).

Colleage at work from Stockport had a 1L Metro for his son. Cheapest quote he could get was ~£1300 tpft, and that was about 18 months ago. My sisters best quote for tpft on a Seicento Sporting at 17 in Northern Ireland was £1800 (and the Seicento is a low insurance group car, even the Sporting version).

All the best

Keith

I know that there are good reasons why insurance companies have to charge more these days, due to incresed theft, accident rates for young drivers, higher number of people without insurance etc, but in say 9 years since i was 17, insurance rates must have increased more than 5 times what it was then. It makes you wonder then why there are so many 17yr olds dying to get behind the wheel of their first car, as with paying silly money for first time insurance, those who dont need a car of of neccessity for work, etc, would surely be better off waiting till at least after 21, though i dont think that 21 or 25 makes a huge difference to premiums like it used to. I wouldnt ask what some of these young-mid 20's drivers are paying to insure the latest hot hatches, and performance cars etc.

Hi

When I was 17 it would have cost me ~£200 for a group 1 car. Same cover now for the same age person would be ~£1000 in the same area. That is a 5 fold increase in, errm, 18 years. At the time a CBR600 was ~£4000 to buy new.

Neighbour is 20 with an RS Turbo Escort and his insurance is under £1000 tpft, although he does have 2 years no claims (at 19 with one years no claims it was £1600).

All the best

Keith

The route most of my friends (and I) have taken is to insure their car in the parents name and have them selves as second driver, even though their parents will probably never actually drive the car.

I am insured in my mums 1.3 escort at a very good price. It cost 50 pounds to add me to her policy so she is paying something like £300 a year instead of £250. The only trick is that when i'm driving its TPO and when my mums driving it then its fully comp.

The other downside is that I don't get the no claims, so when i do decide to insure my own car it will be without no claims.

I'm hoping that once i'm 19 and held my license for over a year then the insurance will naturally drop a little.

Hi

The other problem is that as the named driver you are not meant to be the only / main drivers. The insurance company can refuse to pay up. So, basically, don't crash!

All the best

Thanks for the list.

My parents have suddenly decided that I need a car. Rolling Eyes

However, if they want to buy me one then that's ok! Laughing

I know the quotes are stupidly high, even going on my dads insurance. I'll be 18 in May though, maybe be able to afford it then, if the Robin Reliant hasn't rotted away! Very Happy

Take a lot longer than that for a Reliant to rot away, they aren't known as Plastic Pigs for nothing.

It's not the buying of the car that costs, you can get something ok for under £500 easily, it's the insurance that'll kill you.

BTW I had my parents try and play the same 'steering you into a car' trick on me while I had a 100 by buying me some car lessons Rolling Eyes.

To be honest the quotes aren't much lower for an 18 year old, its the no claims bonus that knocks it down nicely.

But you have to take the first step and get done up the council gritter on first time insurance before you can get those no claims bonus.
Thats the bad part, paying twice your cars value to insure it.
Your not even getting a bit of bang for your buck either, cyclists would probably be able to over take your clapped out panda Very Happy
I also thought all insurers were clued up on the second driver policy trick?

Most are, some don't care. Some charge more to have a young named driver on a cheapy car than they do for the same driver on the same car insured in their own name.

My mate has just bought a rover metro 1.0 and he's looked everywhere for insurance (he says!)

The final quote he got was £2400 a yr.

He said he didn't mind paying that as long as it lets him drive. I gave him the idea of getting on one of his parents insurance, then he let me in on the secret that his mum or dad arent licensed to drive, but they do anyway.

The stupid thing is, He's doing exactly the same!!

I've tried explaining to him that if he's insured and he's got no license, that the insurance is invalid and there's no point him paying for the insurance coz nothing is covered!!

Still he doesn't listen and is insuring his car next week.

He's a bit of a dickhead if you havent gathered! Razz

He would be better off spending the £2400 on getting his whole family through their tests. Rolling Eyes

Ok.. so he gives them £2,400 and lets say they don't ask for his paperwork. He comes to make a claim, they'll want to see it. He gets a producer, they'll want to see it. Moron! Confused Rolling Eyes

exactly what i've been telling him..

What if he hits a car or a person. He's gunna have to pay for everything himself! I bet you, even then he'll try to find some way out of it.

I said to him, if you havent got a license, dont bother with the insurance!! Cos it's not gunna do anything anyway! It's still just as illegal having insurance with no license!!

He's s nobhead! He just doesn't understand anything..

This is the same lad that had petrol pissing out of his carb! I said to him "Just clean the carb out" and he replied "No, I dont like getting my hands dirty! I'll get my dad to do it!"

Just shows you what he's like

Dave..

Insurance is a load of crap in my opinion.

It cost my dad £500 (or there abouts) to insure a 2.3 litre volvo estate for ANY driver. £500 is half what it would cost me to insure a little 900cc mini and yet the volvo obviously is going to be a lot faster.

Now which would you rather a 17 year old driving? A massive tank of a car putting out 130 horse power (the volvo) Or a little mini putting out about maybe 50 horse power?

Anyway, looks like I will be paying the ridiculous amounts of money for car insurance later next year. Rolling Eyes

£2400 on a metro yikes? Im not feeling so bad now that the qoute i got for a Group12 9mth old convertible is over £650. I just think that car drivers are really getting stung these days, and though there are more losses to cover, more accidents etc, it seems like somewhere someone most likely the government is making a packet out of car drivers!

Well that's the dilemma isn't it. Rising insurance costs mean people are more inclined to think "Fook paying that" - hence more uninsured drivers, hence higher premiums for the rest of us I believe, hence more people thinking "Fook it" ad infinitum.

Not actually offering a solution btw, juist merely pointing out the problem Razz

/me shuts up now
