Remote area

He said: "She's quite confused about what happened.

"We've established that she was trying to travel between Carlisle and Windermere and has somehow managed to make a wrong turn and has ended up coming back up the motorway."

A police spokesman added that it was a "miracle" a serious collision had not occurred and thanked drivers who had alerted police by mobile phone.

He said: "We believe she was going the wrong way for up to four miles and she was travelling between 60 and 70 mph in the southbound fast lane.

"The motorway at this point is remote without street lighting and drivers travelling southbound would have only been aware of the approaching vehicle as it was almost upon them."

The driver of a Daewoo car was treated for whiplash at the scene after crashing into the central reservation to evade a head-on smash with the Peugeot.

Drivers began phoning police on seeing the woman near Shap Summit and she was stopped at Shap Beck.

The Crown Prosecution Service will now decide if she should be charged.

COULD?!?! Sorry, but confusion is no excuse and the capability to do something like this on the road should mean her licence.

Must have been terrifying for the other vehicles.

I'm sure it happens more frequently than you'd think.

I mean I've had to flash wave and sound my horn to some old guy who was going the wrong way up a slip ramp to the a40, I'm lucky I wasn't turning right or I would have gone into him..

This just makes another case for my theory that we should all be re-tested semi-frequently if nothing else, it'd improve a lot of peoples driving/riding.

Sad as it is, 80 year olds should not be allowed on the roads, I don't care if it is stereotypical, but if 17 year olds are being questioned whether they should be allowed to drive, so should 80+ year olds.

I think they should undergo some sort of medical to check vision and if they are fit to control a car. Like a mini re-test, Its in all our best interests as cars can be lethal weapons and she could have caused a serious accident doing what she did all.

Ive always thought it a bit odd that we get a driving license for life, surely it would make more sense to have to renew it every 10 years of so and then from 65/70 you have to renew it every year.

Im not sure what we would do to renew the test, maybe go to the test center, have a quick interview, who asks things like how often we drive, do we have any new medical conditions, does and eyetest and either issues a new licence or orders a retest if he suspects your not up to scratch.

In the most case this would be a five minute chat and on your way but Im sure this would be enough to spot people whose eye condition had deteriated below standard, or someone who now had a disability or medical condition that may effect there driving.

Just think of the money they would charge for it in the UK.

To get a license renewed here its like $10.

I bet the UK would ask a 100 quid a pop.

The reason it is only could will be they will be trying their best to get her to surender her licence.....

Not taking it to court will save money...

This should make sod all diffrence and she should be charged.

End of the day 17 or 80 break the law pay the fine....

Pretty sure you do have to renew your licence when you reach 70. Believe this also requires doc to state you are fit to drive.

Doesn't require a doctor, just a self certification.

Think your right there, but then thats it I think you only have to renew it the once, and a lot can change in 10 years.

Happened to us in Gloucester last year, Darby 'n' Joan in a old Vauxhall could hardly see over the wheel turned right at the Eastern Ave/Metz Way junction and tried to drive up the filter lane we were waiting in. My missus, who was driving, stood on the horn and called him all the appropriate names under the sun, the old boy laughed. I actually saw him laughing, he'll be laughing come coronary time.

Then while using the filter lane to cross the A40 to head up to the M50 an old bird decides she's coming across the carriageway and turning right (it's left turn only). When the guy in front got out and told her to fuck off, she said "...no, no it's quite alright" wtf are these people on apart from Prozac, Senokot etc...?

Happened a little while ago near us, except the little old lady killed a motorcyclist.

Of course, she got away with it, just surrendered her license, his family were livid.

At the very least she should spend the rest of her live in prison. I know she was old and all that but the fact she got away with this disgusts me.

We nearly hit some crazy bint on the A30 a while back. It was a bit where you can't see the other carriageway, but she still missed loads of "Dual Carriageway", "No Right Turn" and "No Entry" signs and was coming right at us as we were overtaking a lorry. Luckily the lorry driver saw what was happening and sped up enough for us to get back in behind him while braking hard. The numpty was looking really pissed off and shouting at us, and carried on up the road nearly in the hedge.

Reminds me of a joke: A pensioner is driving home when his wife calls him to say be careful there's some idiot going the wrong way down the motorway. He replies "It's not just one, there's hundreds of them"
