GPZ500 downpipes - as goos as scrap?

Morning all,

Ive been working on my gpz downpipes last night and this morning, trying to recover them.

They have been taken from a 1997 gpz500 with 9700 miles, but previously lived its entire life in swansea.

HEre you can see severe pitting which has caused some of the metal to actually flake off,, probably 1 mm deep.

Here you can see the black bits, these are from the bits of rust which have been sanded away, some of them are worryingly deep.

This is the link pipe between each exhaust, this is heavily corroded and is falling appart. The same is happening to the headers too



IS there any point in me carrying on, or should i just give up and buy a new set of downpipes? anyone know where i can get them cheap??

The exhausts rot from the inside out anyway, that's why its always the joints and link pipes that go first. Nothing wrong with the headers on them, even the link balance pipe looks healthy.

ive since put in some more hours, unfortunately gotta put it back on the bike until i get a free daya again.

Its gonna take me ages to get them shiny again!

mine here almost about to snap on the neck from corroding through, just copper weld em up, it would help to get a mate to do it for free, but if you can find a spare blow torch, some flux, and a copper rod then ur good to go seal em up spary some zorst paint on and will do if you give em a clean an a respray every so often.

i'd suggest getting exhaust paint on as those pipes are made from recycled childrens toys and washing machine panels.

i didnt even scratch off any paint, it was pure rust.


Wont ACF50 after every ride keep it at bay?

Might vaguely help, but they get very hot so will burn off oil based stuff like that rapidly.

They are incredibly tidy looking pipes for a GPZ.

I garauntee they'll rot away underneath the black, conical shaped trim leading up to the end can before the headers themselves go. It's a real water trap.

High temperature paint at a minimum. If you're feeling flush do them with a phosphoric acid based rust killer then paint them.

HEy,

Today im going to get a wire brush attachment for my drill, pick up some of that rust killer and get some high temp black gloss paint.

Is there a high temp lacquer??

I believe that comes under the auspices of 'polishing a turd'.

They are mild steel header pipes. They go rusty, that's life. Most people leave them as mildly rusty at the header ends. If you run the bike up to temperature on a regular basis, they don't get a massive build-up of rust.

If you want shiny header pipes, buy chromed ones. Even these will go blue from the heat unless you were to have double-skinned chrome ones specially made up. Stainless and titanium will likewise discolour with heat.

It's not even like you can see them very easily with the bally pan in place.
