I ordered some nutritional products from the states which came to roughly £90 including business delivery through FedEx. My items got held in customs for a few days and then got released. I got the items eventually. Now a few weeks later today I get sent a letter asking me to pay 50 quid in tax charges. Whats all this about?

Anything I can do about this? Anyone work for HMC? Bit surprised really about these random charges?

It's about parasite politicians needing more money to help pay for their second homes with expense-account overnight-accomodation allowances.

The UK tax system, helping to put the "great" back into britain.

The general rule is 33% , which includes VAT and the handling fee, the gift threashold went down to £18 for yourself and £36 for somebody else.

Also the postage cost is included inthe value of the goods.

Bend over a grit your teeth

On the BBC news just now they did a comparison between goods bought in the UK vs goods bought in the US. The cost of the stuff in the US was £86, and they mentioned "this would fall within your tax-free allowance". As they were also including online purchases I'd imagine online orders are covered?

Tell them to go fvck themselves, which is effectively what I did when the Parcel-Force guy tried to charge me customs duty before I took the parcel and told him to tell his bosses to take me to court. I heard no more about it.

Yeah you have to pay at least 17.5% VAT and then a percentage of import tax which depends on the type of goods. I currently pay 17.5% VAT and 12% Import Duty on items of clothing. Plus Parcel Force or DHL will normally tab on a handling fee of £8-15 ish per parcel.

For small sub-£100 orders it tends to get very expensive, the only way round it is the gift and vlaue trick but many sellers will not do that as they aren't insured for the full amount.

Personally on my large orders i have been very impressed with customs and parcel force as they turn stuff around quick and have been supportive when problems have cropped up and parcel force only charge £13.50 for delivering wardrobe sized parcels.

Basically you have to buy bulk to make it worth it Rolling Eyes

What the fvck is this BS with Parcel-Force charging a 'handeling fee'?! The person paying the postage at the other end has paid that postage for delivery all the way to your door, same as holds with letters.

It's nothing more than common fraud, and we certainly don't pay any such fees for parcels from Japan. As mentioned above, they tried it with a parcel from the states but I fvcked the guy off and took the parcel regardless.

But that's this country all over, rotten to the core.

If it means fvcking customs & excise out of money, take the risk every time. Thumbs Up I'd sooner see £1000 go down the crapper than pay them a penny.

The handling fee is basically a fee for the use of a bonded warehouse and for the goods to be put through customs at speed. I magine if it was all left to the exise you would never ever see your goods.

The handling fee is the bit that tends to push the price through the roof as VAT is charged on top of it.

iirc Parcel force charge about £12 for handling whereas some of the courier companies charge upwards of £40 (+VAT)

This I believe only applies to hand luggage.

Just got a letter from the bailiffs, but after a few more emails and calls to fedex they found that they had made a mistake on there side and amended the amount to 35 quid, which is reasonable so i made the payment.

If anyone has the same issue, send proof of initial purchase showing total amount.

Got done for customs on £50k worth of gear rather than the £10k that i paid.

The vendor held their hands up and gave me the difference Laughing Thumbs Up
