What mileage was your bike when you bought it ?

and have you had any problems with it ? and whats the bike ?

Well i ask this question because i really really want a rvf but the only thing putting me off is that there old and old things tend to break, like old people.

I got my bike with just under 9km on it and its been a absolute bitch (and not in a good way) but i think its more to do with the make and model of the bike than the mileage. My bikes a rs50

I bought my Rs 125 with 9000 km on it and no problems whatsoever and I've done about 3000 km since then.

My new (to me) bike came with 7600 miles on it and it now has about 8500 on it after using it for a few weeks. Its been trouble free as i'd expect having just bought it and it having such a low mileage for the year (2002), its a cbr1100xx if it makes any difference.
Previous bike (dl650) was bought brand new and i had 13k miles on it when i chopped it in and i never once had any problems what so ever with it.
I'd say buy on condition rather than mileage if your looking at an old 400, there are some tidy ones about if you look hard enough.

I bought my bike with 24 000 odd miles on it, its now at 28 423. Only problems I've had with it is that hadnt been ridden in a few years before me, so snapped clutch worm and snapped throttle cable all in the first month, totally reliable 8 months on.

But lots of things that 'break' should be considered consumables anyway like bearings (wheels , head stock) , fork seals , fork legs engine cams cam chains fuel pipes brake pipes etc brakd pads brake seals etc.

edit if you want a reliable bike buy a courier bike , ie

CX500, GT550/750/NTV6/650,

can be bought for very little money and are almost but not quite indestructable

Diversion 900 bought new now has 16000 kms on the clock (perfect so far)
Bandit 650 bought new now has 12000 kms on the clock (one clutch issue, otherwise no issues)
1997 Virago 1100, bought last year second hand with 5000 kms (genuine) - no issues so far.
1979 GS 750 Suzuki (bought second a couple of years ago) spent a shed load of cash on it. Says 25000 kms on the clock, but no idea how many times round the clock its been. Nice bike though

And Finally
1970 Vespa Rally 180 scooter bought second hand about three years ago. Has 67000kms on the clock probably genuine. - Been great so far. Spent about 200 Euros on it in that time.

Hey,

I bought my 1997 CB500 with 17K miles on the clock. So far i've only done 1K miles and have had no problems what so ever. But then it is Honda and it is a CB500 Im hoping it will last me to at least the 100K mark.

I bought my GPZ305 with 35K miles on the clock. I only managed another 5K miles before it dropped a valve I really loved that bike too

CBR600F bought third hand with 16,000 miles, now has over 80,000 with no major problems.

FireBlade bought with 29,000 miles, again no issues so far, but I haven’t caned the mileage yet.

RXS100 bought with about 17,000 miles, seven previous owners, all of whom seemed on a mission to destroy the bike. Most of the rolling chassis has failed in one way or another over the last few thousand miles, but strangely enough the engine has been bomb-proof. I have now completely rebuilt the bike with new and donated parts. Only the frame and engine are original.

The point being, don’t fear high mileage, just owner neglect.

1000 miles on mine when I got it! But it still managed to break down only a few months later from water in the carbs. Totally unrelated to its age or mileage though, but it shows that any age bike CAN go wrong regardless. For something like an RVF400 I'd be more bothered about if it's been raced or not and the condition of the suspension and plastics etc.

My Gixxer 750 had 53K on the clocks when I bought it. Not sure if it was genuine but it doesn't feel or go any different to my old but low mileage 750L. If it has done a real 50K I'm bloody impressed. The speedo needle broke off so it's now got a set of 1100 clocks on it with 32K.

my Fazer had 12,000 on the clock as a 5 year old bike, it now has 40,000 on the clocks 12 months later and I have had no problems with it apart from wear & tear, wheel bearings, brake pads & 2 rear tyres, 1 front tyre, in all those miles.

8000 miles.

I replaced the exhaust system a few years ago with a stainless one - purely because if I'd given Mr. Honda my arm and leg for a Honda replacement I'd not have been able to ride the bike.

Last year I replaced the swingarm - a known weak spot on a Pan - they collect all the crap from the back wheel and rot. I can afford one of those every 10 years though.

Oh, and the backlight bulb needs replacing on the clock (time, not speedo).

Bought my ZX6R with 3000 on it, 1.5 years later it has 20,000 and i have had no problems whatsoever (apart from the consumables like tyres / Valve clearances / oil / brake pads)

Mileage is less important than condition.
