Yeah,

My dad keeps insisting that I buy a brand new bike when I pass my restricted license.

Will I be able to get the finance deal at 17 in FT Education with a Perm PT Job?

I don't have the freakin' money...

Could I pay it through my dad?

Can I have some money?

Leer give me some money.

Yeah...

if you're buying your first bike aftger passing your test, a new one certainly isn't the recommended way, although people DO do it.. my opinion on the whole, and under your circumstances is......

Don't do finance deals for Gods sake. If you must borrow money do it from a family member and pay them back with 0% interest or go to a bank and get a decent rate. Finance deals are notorious rip-offs.

If you were really smart you'd get a cheap first bike because you WILL drop it. Save your pennies for a decent bike in a few years.

What makes him think a new bike is all that much safer?
Ever tried to run in a 125? not something you need to be doing while learning to ride.

You'll get NO finance till your 21

If you do get finance you'll be paying for it for the next few years, well after its rotted into oblivion and worth half what you payed if your lucky (not taking into account the extra 40% you payed in hiked up interest)

A tatty 125 with disc brakes, 4stroke Japanese something, £500 is all you need (if that)

I can't see the point in buying a new vehicle at your age, well basically my age Razz.

You're gonna be on a low income, so that would hit your monies hard, and when you come to re-sell you'll be hit hard.

Not to mention the first service costs and the pain in the ass running in period, also I'd reckon a new bike might be more expensive to insure?

Either way, if I were to up and sell my nsr my next bike would be used.

Great idea. Wheel it out of the showroom and immediately flush 20% of what you've spent down the toilet.

There are bikes out there that are three or four years old with only a couple of thousand miles on them, much cheapness. Keep your eyes peeled. People buy them on a whim (especially 40-something businessmen) then either find they don't have time to use them or are scared shitless first time out and never ride them again. They sit in the garage for a few years then get sold to people like me who proceed to rag the arse off them until they break then get a new one.

You will take a massive hit when you buy it.
Insurance will be dear.
You will notice every mark you put on it.
Highly nickable.
HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE waste of money.

My first bike lasted a whole year before something went wrong with it (Steering head bearings) It cost me £250. If you have to get something new buy nearly new I got £1500 off a bike because it was 6 months old with 3200 miles on it, there was not a mark anywhere it could easily be as new.

One key thing.

Consider a couple year old unfaired 600cc bike. Theyre always pretty competent, speed and handling wise, and are popular, therefore easy to sell when its time for something else.

Best reason though, for a new rider in particular, is when you drop it, youre not going to smashup the plastics (ok maybe the tail unit).

I have a friend who bought a brand new Sv650, damn shiny with a few extras on finance the day he passed. He wrote it off 3 days later and now is paying for something he no longer owns due to only having tpft and him being 100% liable.
Its just not worth it mate.

Go for a second hand bandit, they are built to run and run and are a great starter bike for the bigger sizes. I've had mine for nearly a year now and its such fun, but is not too much of a handfull. Plus, if anything ever goes wrong eBay has a continual supply of every single component part so its never going to cost much if it all goes wrong.
Thumbs Up

I wouldn't get a new bike for so many reasons. The first reason is that most people your age will show off and screw up, be it in cars or bikes. I have and so have most people I know. Get something cheap and cheerful you can get to grips on and won't leave you in tears if you bin it.

I totally agree with trickysax, a Bandit would be great to start with. Cheap as chips and easy to sort if anything happens to it.

You will not get any kind of loan at your age anyway. Banks cannot and will not lend money to anyone under 18. Besides, do you really want to be owing thousands of pounds at your age?

Depreciation on anything new is going to lose you thousands. I would only get something new if I had loads of money kicking about and I had nothing better to do with it. If you are buying new for a piece of mind, get something from a reputable dealer. My local dealer, Bransons has quite a few decent bikes kicking around on the forecourt for reasonable money with a 3 month warranty.

You've got your whole life ahead of you to spend thousands and thousands on something that you really want. Save up for it, and you won't be giving half of your money to the bank in interest. I tell you what, take a look online to get an idea of how much a loan will cost and look at the total amount you will pay back to them over time, you will be very surprised! Obviouslly, this is presuming you were over 18.

No, unless your dad guarentees it, so if you can't pay they come after him.

Get a second hand bike, new ones are daylight robbery. Show him this thread!

I agree with all the above.

Your Dad insisting on a new bike is just plain silly. You'll take a huge hit on the resale the moment it leaves the forecourt.

You /will/ drop a new bike. It's much easier on your heart if the bike's not entirely perfect to start with.

I know at 18 I couldn't afford several thousand pounds, and my future certainly wasn't secure enough to tie myself to a few hundred pounds a month.
I suggest you save up about £2000, or get a loan. That'll get you a decent 600cc bike, and insurance.

I was offered finance and i am 18, although they wanted something daft like 18% interest. Did it through my dad instead (so i just pay my dad) and he got 3% or something crazy like that (he has never defaulted or missed a payment in his entire history of credit!)

He could of paid cash for it and i just paid him back, but he gained more in interest on the money in his bank than he lost in interest on the finance agreement.

But yes, i wouldn't recomend buying new, i bought my moped new and came off that twice, bought my first 125 new and came off that 3 times. Just bought another new 125 (after totally destroying the gearbox on the old 'new' 125), i am like that though. Went into the bike shop to have a look and came out owing 2400, now how does that work out?
