How does everyone think they are perceived by the general public? I believe people see me as a threat because i have a black bike and full black protective gear. It appears like they see me as a big bad biker. This seems to work against me when filtering, overtaking or passing police. I'm not a nutter and i stick to roughly the speed lmit, i am a very courteous rider, I don't tailgate when people are going to slow, i dont race and I let people pull out when merging and such.

What is it that makes us seem like bad people?

And another thing, are people happy with the way they are percieved, and is it a true asumption?

Are we all the big bad bikers that were made out to be?

I think a lot of folks think that having a bike is reckless and dangerous there-for they assume thats the kind of people that have them. That coudn't be further from the truth as some of us are really quite boring and staid.

Also, when you can't see anything of a person's features its impossible to make judgements about them (we all do it, even if only subconsciously.) All they can see is someone who looks like a stormtrooper or member of the imperial guard.

There you go, its not their fault, blame Star Wars.

That is all. Thumbs Up

I have a sign above my desk which states:

Quote:

Jeff Silk's Symbol of Anarchy and Rebellion

Jeff Silk happens to be an old friend and work colleague who has known me since I was a little girl. He has always perceived me as a hard working, well mannered violinist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Classical Music.

The first time he noticed my bike gear in the office he was shocked and then appalled. He simply could not believe that I could be all he originally perceived and ride a bike. Jeff isn't a prejudiced man, he is broad minded, well educated and fair which is why his reaction amazed me so much. His perception of bikers (especially female bikers) has always ecapsulated an element of the rebel and anarchist - that has now changed!

It's up to us as individuals to change people's perceptions if we really do want to do that - it isn't difficult to do... Or do we actually quite like having the option to be 'scary and threatening' when it suits us most?

I can't say I've ever been aware of people acting like they're intimidated by me, in bike gear or otherwise.

But then I do tend to wander around in a world of my own, oblivious to everything.

Not wanting to make and improper comparison, but it's a kin to racism, people don't need a reason prejudice is enough.

Since breaking my foot in a filtering collision, which people expect to have been my fault I've gone to great lengths to point out that filtering is legal. I get asked "...are you giving 'it' up now?" as if a vehicular accident will make me see sense, and go back to using a car. I've seen two deaths this year on the M5 one involving a coach passenger, and one involving a car. I think people are control freaks, and if they can't appreciate how to manage a risk, the shutters come down (mentally speaking). Penny Coin Penny Coin

To be honest this looks more like your own perception rather than anyone elses.

People seem to be intrigued rather than threatened.

There's a couple of brothers on my street, about 3 and 6 ish, who are in awe of me. If they're outside when I get on my bike they always ask me where I'm going etc. Their mum doesn't seem too scared that her sons are talking to a "big bad biker" either. On roads people tend to let me through quite a lot, so I'm obviously not that scary. Maybe it's the L plates.

No I don't believe people view me as a 'big bad biker' I don't think that 90% of people think like that.

I think that some bikers like to think that most non bikers think bikers are tough and rebellious - because they like to be associated with that image.

I have not really noticed any difference to the way I have been treated - sure I get some funny looks when I'm buying baby milk in full leathers, but its not a sight you see everyday.

I couldn't give a fuck really, I know who I am, I don't care what others think.

I'm with Killa. Riding through the toon last week, bit lost on the way back from an(other) interview... Traffic stacked up through one of the tunnels, spied a convertible TT, my right hand sort of went, twist, flick, flick, twist, POW!!!!!!!!!!! Heard a long Beeeeeeeep.

Aaaah, sue me.

I don't know what came over me, I was buzzing, haven't been been playing with traffic for a long time, I was singing 'Beautiful Girls' to myself and allsorts.

Best one I heard was on here, I can't remember who, one of the originals I think, who rode past a car, the driver was which had his arm out the window, holding a fag, rode past and nicked the fag Mr. Green

When I had the Hyosung I went to fill up at Sainsbury's York.

I spent about 5 mins putting lid and gloves on with a Volvo waiting patiently behind.

I spent 30 secs writing fuel cost down ion company car and WW3 breaks out behind me.

I found this interesting....
