A dead motorcyclist's family who were awarded £110,000 in compensation for his death have urged others to make similar claims.
Richard Chris Cooper, 58, lost control of his Yamaha Royal Star 1300 after riding through a fuel spill on the B6403 in Lincolnshire, in March 2006.
The Dorset father-of-two then collided with a van - he later died in hospital.
The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), which compensates victims of untraced or uninsured drivers, made the payout.

Mr Campbell said: "Motorcyclists and drivers who are involved in accidents and suffer injuries as a result of diesel spills often don't realise they can claim compensation because the person responsible for the spill may be unknown."

About time too, but being my usual cynical self, how long before the excuses start so they don't have to pay out?

Are the reasons for diesel spilling, 1 - over filling and 2 - a dodgey tank?
I've never really looked into it.

Edit:- I had an idea the other day that there should be a council or service vehicle that can combat a spill if reported. A bit like the road sweepers.
No one bothers if you call them.

Both. Some overfill deliberately or due to a faulty sensor on the pump. A dodgy cap means that when they go round a bend that the fuel 'sloshes' about and sprays out the tank.

Biggest problem round by me tends to be tractors.

I've phoned both Crewe and Congleton CC and on both occasions they sent someone out, to throw sand on the road Rolling Eyes

I phoned Crewe Police once and despite them saying there was little they could actually do they did close the road until it was cleaned.

Is there something that gets rid of diesel?

Im thinking of fitments for a service vehicle, for example, compressed air hoses. You report the spill on whatever road, truck comes out, blasts that diesel where it isn't going to cause trouble.

Thinking

When I reported a huge diesel spill when I was at University, they sent the fire brigade out to wash the road with their hose.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Highways Agency, Local Council, the Police - take your pick depending on where you are.

I'd tend to report it to the Police and let them route the call same as I do broken traffic lights.

Here's the three posts out of the original thead:

About FUCKING time this issue was addressed to somebody's satisfaction. We get these govt cocksuckers chomping on about dangerous bikers speeding, and pouring huge resources into revenue-collecting schemes, but they do fvck-all about something which is massively more dangerous and kills and cripples shed-loads of bikers every year. I wonder why that is...oh yeah, there's fvck-all revenue in it for the scum running the show.

There needs to be mandatory jail time for anyone caught spilling diesel onto the road as a result of over-filled tanks and/or an insecure capping mechanism.

But don't hold your breath for any action; like I said, there's no earner in it for the scum. Evil or Very Mad

It's one of those problems that never gets any mainstream media attention (like so many other issues - we won't go there though).

Only last week I was in a petrol station minding my own business when I noticed the double-glazing van infront being filled to the absolute brim by some mindless nobber. You could see it was going to leak too, diesel stains from the last time were evident all down that side of the van. I bet every time he turned left it gushed out. Shocked

Yeah compensation aside I'm glad someone has taken this issue seriously and his family have closure. But to be honest all it takes is for people to more considerate of others, call me old-fashioned but that's the way I look at it.

Kris, did you report him? The owner of any vehicle that spills fuel on the road is liable to a fine.

No fuel was spilt as he filled it up (quite literally to the brim), but as I was in the process of filling myself I had no idea if any came out as he drove off. My point was that it's quite common for the drivers of these company vehicles to think nothing of doing this.
