PostPosted: 09:54 - 06 Nov 2007    Post subject: Credit Checking? Check My Credit Score? Reply with quote

Hi, the situation has arrived where I could really do with a loan, now I thought I had a good credit rating, however, I got rejected with two separate (Nationwide and Alliance and Leicester) companies, so I'm a little concerned.

In desperation, I applied to Nationwide for a credit card, to take up their 0% offer, as it moves money around, and they gave me a gold card with a £3500 credit limit. This to me, indicates my credit risk isn't too bad. Which makes me want to see it even more.

Simple questions, has anyone applied for their credit profile before? I can't seem to find any telephone numbers for companies involved. Does anyone use anything like credit expert?

Thanks in advance.

Chriss

Go Here get the 30 day free trail, just remember to follow the correct procedure before the end of the 30 days, so you do not get billed afterwards.

Used them myself and its OK. Quite a lot of companies have had to provide this service to their staff/customers, due to them releasing personal details.... Or some numpty has had their laptop stolen with wage details on....

You can find plenty of online credit check companies that may be able to retrieve your information. Just be careful about giving out your personal details, be sure that the company looks legit and are a certified CRA registered company.

Experian and Equifax are a couple of Uk based places I found online, but I cant say I've ever used them. Only apply the once though as you yourself requesting a credit history is also recorded and can go against you if requested too many times in a certain time period.

Hi

Credit reference agencies (Experian & Equifax are the main ones) are obliged to provide the personal data they hold on you for a nominal amount (from memory £2). However as they make no money on this they tend to hide this "service" while pushing more expensive ones.

While they can provide you with an idea of how you would come up in a scorecard, it is of no great use. All different credit providers will use their own scorecard.

All the best

Keith

Getting 3k limit is nothing, I got a 3k limit from tesco online, I didn't have to sign anything. I filled out the online form and in a week a had a card with a 3k limit, I'm 20 and had been in employment for 2 weeks when I got the card.

Quick follow up question from this, if I got a black mark against my name with one credit company, would that be on my record with another credit company?

Hi

Depends who the credit issue is with. Not all credit companies will deal with both credit reference agencies.

There isn't really such a thing as a black mark. They store all the credit repayments that are reported to them with a status for the payments. Ie, on time, slightly late, etc, down to bad debt and they have given up trying to get it back. Some companies score cards will not care about a few late payments, others will see it as serious.

There is also the public info on there (CCJs, electoral roll, etc), suspected fraud records and previous searches (not all previous searches will appear to all credit companies, and a seach for you checking your details should not be reported at all).

All the best

Keith

Sounds like there's nothing for me to really check, and a bit pointless for me to persue? Probably just didn't tick a box for the loan?

Hi

Worth paying the £2 for your own details. Never know but you might find something nasty. Like someone getting rejected for a loan application attempt in your name or something equally wrongly put against you.

All the best

Hi

https://www.experiangroup.com/corporate/tools/contactus/

Equifax seem more cheeky. They want you to pay to find out their phone number!

https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/sitepage.ehtml?forward=gb_contact_us

But I did find the bit on the statutory £2 report.

https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/sitepage.ehtml?forward=gb_elearning_credit14

All the best

Keith

Pretty much what Keith has said really - your credit "rating" is not made up simply of "black and white" statements and marks.

There are two stages to a credit check really - (1) verifying that you are who you say that you are, and (2) your history with bad debts, CCJs etc...

In fact, CCJs etc can actually boost your score for point (1), but would obviously could have an adverse effect on your ability to get credit etc...

But ultimately, when a company does a credit on you, they get a confidence score returned on you, with ticks next to certain criteria boxes, which are then interpreted at the discretion of each company.

Experian and Equifax are definately the big players in this market, and they hold data on pretty much everyone. Most, if not all, authentication software used by companies that need credit checking would use data provided by either Experian or Equifax.
