Hi

Yes, major differenes. Substantially larger engine, different ignition system, different tacho drive (think), chain on the other side, quite likely radiator pipes on the other side, etc.

All the best

Keith

Whilst you're reading Keith, why is that, i've never got the reason behind the chain on the other side.

So people can't easily put the 125 engine in the 50 frame and use it as a 50??

there is no reason...it's cos the damn thing is made by Aprilia, damn Italians !

i had the RS50 and it was great, but at the asme time i was glad to see it go. would rather not have another Aprilia - everyone i know sees them as unreliable.

and no the engine wont fit - it is asked a lot on some of the aprilia forums and it just wont fit without a lot of mods.
along with all the above listed problems, the chain being on the wrong side means so is the brake...so you'd have to get custom brake lines and the extra power might cause the brakes to be insufficient and everything else. just get the RS125 is you want one.

I thought the Rotax lump was used in karts? Am i right in thinking that carts have RHS chain drives linking the engine to the rear wheel? I've never thought that myself too. Makes it a damn sight difficult to swap with another engine i suppose.

Hi

Chain thing seems to be an Austrian hang up. The RS125 uses an Austrian Rotax engine and they pretty much all have the chains on the right (as do most KTMs it seems).

Suspect it is to do with a preference for a kick start that you use while standing beside the bike, and it is easier to have a kickstart on the clutch side. That means putting the clutch on the left which leaves the chain on the right.

All the best

Keith

Older ones used the Minarelli AM6, now the new ones are Derbi's.

Yes that'll work, ignoring the fact the brake caliper and gubbings will now get in the way, assuming there's enough room for the chain run on the other side, you'll have to bodge on a chain slider etc. etc. Laughing

Suppose you'd just hack a hole in the fairing to make room too? Laughing
