I've got a query on my Broadband usage with my ISP and I'm wondering, is there a piece of software (aready within windows or eslewhere) that youcan switch on/install that will have a graph/display of your uploads and downloads in real time as you use the machine?

I've got some obscenely high downloads for several days a month, over the last couple of months, that I'm trying to track down if someone else is maybe piggybacking my wireless...

Anyone any ideas?
TIA
Adam

There's nothing as far as I know of to check your useage if you're using a router, as the router holds the connection rather than the PC.

If you're not using the wireless, switch it off, if you are, encrypt it using WPA, as WEP has been proved to thoerectically be hackable.

It's not a theory. Wink

A quick google brings up https://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2158824/bandwidth-monitor-v1-025

Not tried anything like this before as I've 6 or 7 machines using the same connection so cant comment on how good it is.

Does this DU meter measure the amount of usage being used by the PC or the router?

The only problem I see, if someone's got into his router, then the PC will show the amount of data being passed from his PC to the router, but not the amount of data being transfered from the thief's PC to the router.

Yours Baffled of Birchington.

If you reset your router at 00:00 at the beginning of the month there should be a diagnostics page on it that will give total bytes sent/recieved since last reboot.

I think I worded it wrong really, although proven, and quick to do, it's not (yet, as far as I know) easily done for the likes of script kiddies.

In most routers you can view the DHCP leases, Have a look about in the router's menu. It shows you the computer name of all computers connected.

Been using Net Meter for years now to keep an eye on things. It gives you upload and download volumes for the day/week and month and a real time graph. You can compare you usage to what your ISP is saying your using.

Theres a Polish bloke in the flats opposite me and he has created his own wireless hi gain antenna by putting his usb adaptor inside a metal strainer of some description and taping it to the outside of his window to connect to a non encrypted connection. Laughing

I know my wireless is triple secure as it's WPA encrypted, doesnt transmit it's ssid and also restricts access by mac address but thats what comes from it being your job. Thumbs Up

The RC4 crack is pretty much only used by script kiddies. Airsnort, WEPcrack and WEPwedgie are just a few of the pretty much point and click packages around. Most of those have been around since at least 2005 Wink
