Hey, i've just applied for a job and ive been for my first interview if i get it (Im not going to spend money i dont have, nor' that that im not getting). But IF i get it, whats a decent car to start off with? Money wouldnt be that big of an issue as long as all together it doesnt come to over £4000 - £4500.

I been looking at an 03' Ford Fiesta! My mate has a newer one with the better lights and that but i cant afford that i dont think, not the insurance too.

I like them in black and green.

Any other first car proposals? I dont want a really gay chav one that can be modified i just want one that's fairly new model and is sweet, i mean, ill lower the fiesta if i choose it but nothing more.

Also been looking at the 03' Clio's my mate had one of these before it became an insurance write off and he got the fiesta, not his fault Smile

Thanks guys Smile

id get a cheapo one if i were you. your first car is the one you will make all the mistakes and learn in, and thrash (dont deny it) so an older or cheaper model is usually the best bet.

ive got a mark 3 fiesta 1.1 at the moment, saving up to buy a smart roadster sometime in the not - too - distant future (i hope Thumbs Up)insurance is a rip off too. ive been driving for a year and drive all the vans at work including my bosses vw transporter sportwagon executive (remember the topgear van test? clarksons one) despite this, AND a brother working at norwich union, ins (admittedly full comp) was still near as makes no difference £1000 Mad

True, i will thrash it, but not ott ammounts.

If i have the money, i want a decent car, im a safe driver on my bike and whilst learning, i dont think ill be a twat, im sure of that, im only having 1 friend in, my best and thats it.

You could get a Clio 192 for that. Bastard Wink

But true, well worth looking out for the ellusive 1 lady owner, low mileage, 1.4 that is a decent car but it's age is forcing it to have a low price.

4.5k on a first car is bananas unless your a Daddies Princess.

hope you find a car soon, but the advice of an older car is good advice. You will make loads of mistakes, probably scratch it at some point and therefore de-value it considerably.

My 19 year old daughter has an S reg ford Fiesta, perfect as a first car, full service history, well looked after, but not too expensive if she makes mistakes in it.

You are lucky that your father is able to help you out with the purchase of a car, my first car was bought entirely by me, and I had to pay for the insurance & tax myself. It is only now that I am getting the tax for my car and the first installment of my insurance paid for by my mum for christmas and birthday presents, If she didn't do that she knows I will leave the car SORN and continue riding the bike through winter. She hates me on the bike!! Very Happy

Right sobered up (few what a night), what you have to ask yourself is… What do you want in a car, do you want c/d player air-con, alloys, write down on a piece of paper all the things you want and the things you are not bothered about… if you are using it for work do you need boot space?, do you need four doors? Etc.

Then look at the cars that are in you’re budget that have the equipment that you require,

Also you will need to look at what the Insurance is going to cost you. I would think that any car that is over group four insurance would be out!!

This is the way to narrow down your options; you have to look at maintenance servicing cost,

This should lead you down the right road, in my rack and pinion,

My advice would be something like a 02 Fiesta 1.25 zetec A/C (it’s in your budget)
A smart looking car with plenty of equipment good miles per gallon, great engine 100,00 between cam-belt changes… as fast as most 1.4’s, cheap to service and friendly on the insurance,

Just make sure that if you buy from a garage that the car you get is serviced up to date, has a warranty of at least six months, and is hpi clear.

If you want any further advice feel free to give me a shout.

Wish you luck…

Oh and one last thing don’t let you heart rule you’re pocket. Wink

Or a Mk4 1.25 Ford Fiesta, the engine is the same as the newer ones using the Duratec engine. Hell of a lot cheaper, if you get the Zetec or the Ghia version, you get a lot of nice commodities as well like heated front screen, electric mirrors etc etc for under £3000 with less than 50,000 miles on the clock.

Remember, insurance will be a lot on a newer car. Insurance will be at least £1000 TPFT on pretty much any car at your age anyway.

Yeah, well heres the situation.

Im waiting for the job to write or call me, if i get it then i can seriously start thinking about it.

I like that fiesta your on about, mate in wales has one and never shuts up about it.

This one right?

https://www.smallcarspecialists.co.uk/images/free.jpg

It's alright Smile

I will only need it to be a 3 door, boot space...well it needs a boot but not tremendus ammount of space really. Im not putting a big sub in it like my mate so that wont matter.

Not bothered about Air Con, as ill be tight for the first few months whilst i get on my feet with the job so i dont like the idea of using more petrol than i have to!

Oh yeah, it HAS to be petrol, i dont like diesels that much, too noisy.

Electric windows, would like them but its not a nessecity.

Power Steering, i suppose you get it with the Zetec? I would like it...a lot. Makes things a lot easier.

I wouldn't mind alloys, but i suppose if i dont have them i can pay for the car and then get some from a shop with either my uncles taxi discount (He's white can you believe it!) or my mates shop discount if he still works there.

Thanks guys real help Smile Especially ken and kitkat! Do either of you have msn? Drop me a pm with it if you do Thumbs Up

I know a lot of you are thinking im going to be a typical boy racer but no, i value my life so i guess im not putting no big induction kit and a fake nos button on the car, dont worry!

I've been offered by my nan, to go on her insurance (She'll do anything for me its great Very Happy) and i got a quote on a 1.6 Pug 306 for myself which was £2,000 and on my nans it was £750 fully comp, thats a bargain i think you'll all agree. I know i need to get my own NCB though so Smile

Thanks a lot!

Dont know much about engines, just know that the bigger the litre which is the CC in 000's the more insurance will be.

Thanks man Smile

I just thought I'd stick my oar in.

Any car that gets you from place to place is a decent one.

You don't have to spend the sort of money you're talking about to get a decent motor - hell I wouldn't pay that now. My current car cost £750, and has been faultless over the 15k I've done in it.

The car I had the most fun in was a MK2 Fiesta 990cc, cost me £50 around 5 years ago.

I'm not saying don't spend £4k, you will if you want to, I can't stop you, but spending that sort of money on a depreciating asset is foolish IMO.

Spend less, and save the money - stick it in a bank, build up some cash for stuff like a new bike when you can get one (i.e. out of restriction), or even a bit longer term - you may want to try and buy a house in 5 or even 10 years time - be a lot easier if you have some cash tucked away.

I know this sort of advice doesn't sound the ticket when you're 17, but believe me, I'm 27 now, and there is no way I could get my hands on £4k, and I have a decent job. All I'm saying is that a bit of prudence is good - you can still get a good car for a grand, no problem.

Prefer the facelift one tbh. Just looks 100% better imo, its exactly the same as my mates, he's only changed the lights and it looks awesome, here are some pics.

He's spent £150 - £200 on mods i think...thats all i'll wanna do.

Thanks guys Smile Im looking for the Feista now haha! Smile

For 4k you could get soooo much more than a Ford Fiesta mate, I mean... why not spend 2k on a fast, reliable jap car and then 2k on TPO insurance on your nans policy? you could be talking group 14-17 cars then!!

my 7pence Thumbs Up If your after a basic first car then I suppose a Ford Fiesta would do but hardly exciting is it?

Im not looking for a fast car Smile Just i know im not spending £4k on a frigging fiesta!

Ill look around for prices and me and my dad will too but i have to get this job first! If i dont im going to be so pissed!

I will get a good car sooner or later, but id like just a fiesta or clio or something similar until i get the hang of driving on my own. No point in buying a Toyota Supra for a first car and killing yourself is there?

Thanks Smile

Hi

Another vote for a cheap first car. You will damage it, even if that is just something like learning which cars to avoid parking beside if you don't want their doors opening into yours. Similarly chewing up the alloys while parking by the curb.

I would say spend £1k tops (you can easily get a reliable car for that), and plan on keeping it a year to get some no claims before getting something more interesting (and a years no claims will greatly help your insurance, if you do land up claiming then at least you haven't lost a £4k car as well in the process).

Fiesta isn't a dream car for most people.

All the best

Keith

Why?

Sorry, struggle to equate a strong desire with a Ford Fiasco.
