I uninstalled mcafee as my 30 day trial had expired, then installed avg, and turned windows firewall on. Then when i went to log into windows messenger it wouldnt log in, the 2 men thing just kept turning around then the message came up saying either you do not have a connection or the service is unavailable. I tried several times, but nothing. So i checked for anything that could be stopping it and couldnt find anything, so i uninstalled avg and turned windows firewall off, still wouldnt work, ended up turning mcafee back on as i get years free subscription with natwest.
But windows messenger still wont work, i have tried reinstalling it but no change.
Anyone got any ideas. cheers.

Sometimes the servers go down for quite a while. Go to www.iloveim.com and see if you can sign in there. If you can and Messenger still doesn't work try trillian

did you try iloveim? It's a browser based messenger using flash. If you can't sign in there it's most likely a problem with the Live servers, or possibly firewall settings. If you can it's to do with your copy of messenger

No i didnt try it i will do though. I reinstalled windows messenger after much reseting of settings.
It now logs in but logs me out a few minutes later, and i am unable to chat to anybody during those 4 minutes. I looked in the options bit under connections and saw this. I circled it in red, could this be what is causing the problem? If so how do i go about changing it so that it works?

Upnp is universal plug and play. If your router is set up to use it that should be fine. I'm assuming you have no problems with web browsing/downloads etc. What version of Windows do you have?

FIREWALLLLLLLL HAVE YOU BEEN DENYING MSN ACCESS?

/caps

Yeah, go into your firewall and see if its blocking Windows Live Messenger, screen shot would be beneficial.

Thumbs Up

I dont why this would be the case, but:

As msn messenger uses a different port to web browsing, it may be possible that your router OR firewall is blocking the msn messenger port

Did / have you changed the router settings? Does it work on another machine?

Also Vista is a pain in the ass, so make sure you have the right version of MSN messenger for it (~WLM 8.5)

If your that desperate use MSN webmessenger which uses your web browser to mimic msn messenger (but things like video, file transfers etc are disabled)

I have checked all the firewall settings, I also reset my router to make sure it wasnt the router blocking it, Still doesnt work.
I have windows messenger 8.5 installed, it just logs me in then after a few mins logs me out, and in that time i cant chat to anyone for whatever reason. Really annoying. Its no big loss but its one of those little things that annoys me.

Slightly off topic but , , , Get a decent firewall as the Windoze one is not up to scratch. There are plenty of free good ones out there that are much more thorough than Bill's version.
