When getting my bike serviced a month of so ago (1st serivce on my JinLun 06 125-11); the guy in the store tried to flog me some special spray on stuff that helps keep rust away.

Didn;t have any cash at the time, and said I'd come back for it another time. I never did.

The guy basically said that my bike needs to be protected before the winter really hits - and it is imperative it's done before the gritters come out. He said the Salt on the road could litterally rust the bike and make it start falling apart very, very quickly indeed (especially on the JinLun bikes apparently)

Just kicking back watching some TV and have noticed a few gritters going past; and am now worried about this. I've not got any protection on the bike apart from the usual WD40 I put on after a wash and clean (which I never done this weekend!)

Any of you guys used anthing like this before? Is there anything you could suggest that would help?

I commute about 12 miles a day; and it looks like tomorrow will be the bike's first contact with this salt stuff.

Any advice appreciated!!

That was the stuff he was trying to sell me. Will have to get some at the weekend.....

Any tips until then ? What about if I just run a hose over the bike each time I get home from work this week and the gritters have been out?

Is what I do, once the bike's cooled, followed by a half decent clean at the weekend and had no problems with corrosion.

I ran my bike last year throughout winter, just washed it regularly with hot, soapy water, wiped it down, then occasionally I give some bits a spray with silicone spray - makes it easy to wipe the crud off it when I get home from work. I have had no problems with corrosion, but then Jinlun's are renowned for rust even if just used in summer.

with FS365 it reacts with the salt and creates a thin layer of crud all over the bike , my NTV is covered with about 300 layers of the stuff which means when it rains most of the crud comes off,

thus you can just keep reapplying over the layers of crud and your bike will have a protective layer of crud all over it, thing is you touch my bike anywhere except the seat the bars and the controls you get a thick greyish type sludge which is impossible to get off (which is partly due to the fact I covered the entire bike except for the brakes in grease when i lived near the sea).

When it starts falling to bits due to the salt, take it back and claim your money back, as unfit for use. Under the CCA......

Be cheeky and say well if you sold the bike to me, then you should provide the stuff FOC.....

Tis a total joke that anything should be sold that cannot stand a bit of salt thrown at it. They have managed to make car that can stand it, so where is the problem with bikes.

Don't wash in hot water, it makes the salt react quicker and do more damage, always use cold water.

ACF50 is great stuff, it is expensive but you don't use it in the same way as you use 365 so it lasts ages. This stuff is used for targeted application, so just a tiny amount on fasteners, brackets etc that corrode the worst. It then stays on even when you've washed it so you don't need to reapply that often.

I never wash my bike and don't have problems with corrosion. My engine has a nice thick coating of oil around the front of it and the wheels are just about black from grime.

Dirt ftw Wink

Having tried SoND's technique in my younger days, the bike will be f*cked when you clean the crud off in the spring Sad

I'd recommend rinsing the bike down after riding on wet salted roads and applying FS365. ACF50 is good to use in areas which are difficult to reach. My VFR750 winter bike survived winter pretty much unscathed using this technique Thumbs Up

I got my ybr throught winter without a spot of rust, using a combination of fs365 and ACF50.

Give the bike a THOROUGH clean once a week with a leading brand pruduct, such as muck off, dry the bike completely, then use acf50 of the shocks, swingarm, boltheads, exhaust etc. Use fs365 on the rest of the metal bits.

after 150 miles, respray acf50 and fs365.

will see how it goes on the gpz this winter...havnt done anything too it yet, havnt cleaned it since i got it...5 weeks ago!
