But there's a problem. My old bike was sat behind the hedge, not chained and not visible from the road and my other bike is in the way if some tires to nick it.. or so I thought, still my fault for not chaining though. Theyve managed to take it through that gap...somehow...

Anyway the situation is the police rang me to say the bike was recovered and is in a compound, so I rung the place.. and they told me it had a release fee of 129quid... The bike already didnt work anyway, and was SORN... (does SORN mean it needs to be in a garage of just literally off the road? like where I kept it). So can I appeal in some sort of way and have the bike released for free as I cant really claim it off my insurance, as its not insured. Police said I would have to claim it off insurance or something... I mean its hardly worth anything if I sell it now anyway, and I dont know what condition its in... What do I do?

if your bikes on a sorn and kept on private property then its alryte wether its out side or in a garage

to be honest im guessin the bikes gonna be in a pretty bad way, may cost you more in the long run

It's a sick joke on behalf of the legal authorities in thiscountry. It's nothing other than a tax on being the victim of crime.

You get your bike stolen, then you get robbed of another £150 by the police when it turns up again.

I suggest you write to your MP which is what I did when the police 'recovered' my only just stolen C90 from 100yds away from my house then tried to charge me £150 to get it back. Not that it does any good.

Up to you if you want to make thinly veiled suggestions as to the possible passing of brown envelopes between the recovery company and the police on a recovery by recovery basis (you're not telling me they don't take a cut anyway, maybe time for a freedom of information request?)

Personally, I told them, that if they thought they could get £150 for a burnt out C90 then they were welcome to it.

They could contact the owner and have them pick it up from where it was discovered. Used to happen when I was a youth. Nowadays they just call-in the recovery without a thought.

They don't.

How much is your call out fee?


The foot soldiers might not get a cut of the fee but you can bet the MPs who own shares in such companies do,

my out rate is about £200 an hour (and I'm cheap my ex boss had an out rate of £1300 an hour), I can get called out all week to work at a client's place I get the same salary + statutory expenses ie 24p per mile I travel,

Company I worked for had to be able to get a recovery vehicle to a call out within their area 24 hrs a day 365 days of the year.

No MP owned a share of the company.

No back handers were paid for the contract.

You supply a LWB high top vehicle equipped with a driver available 24hours a day, winch, fire suppression equipment, materials to soak up fuel/oil spills (you are not paid extra for this either), storage under cover insured premises, lights etc then tell me the going rate is too much.

So your out rate is £200 an hour and yet you begrudge a recovery company spending 3 hours, 1 on site and 1 each way travelling £112.50+vat.

its a 1989 CG125, thats god blocked carbs and needs a new accelarator cabley thing. Its worth about 300-400quid if I sell it around march april time... I mean Im gona pay 130now... would I make more if I brake it and sell it peace by peace? Ye I guess Im gona have to go and have a look... I dont even have a bloody trailer... argh...

As he said, Itchy doesn't get the £200 an hour... he gets his normal daily wage. Even though he has to make the effort to work somewhere else, away from all his normal work facilities and colleagues (Not necessarily a bad thing). But anyway the point is someone is making a mint out of that service and it ain't him (A normal 37.5 hour week would earn the company £7500)

Its £105 fee for the recovery and the bike has already accrued two days storage at £12 a day. None of the charges attract VAT as they are both statutory fess (standard charges as layed down by the government).

Yes you're right, been 3 years since I did it.

Instead of abusing the recovery companies abuse the police for selling off their recovery vehicles and closing the pounds.

Years ago when my car got nicked, the cops found it and then used me as bait to try and catch the thieves! Very Happy

I spoke to them via my mobile as I approached the location where they'd found it. They were not apparently there but assured me they'd make themselves known as soon as the criminals tried to stop me re-taking possession of my car!

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, no-one tried to stop me and I just got in the car and drove it home with it's mangled steering wheel (presumably a bar had been used to break steering lock).

They even refused to come out when I offered them the price of a few pints as thanks.

What happened to the good old days???

I did. I just accused the police of taking backhanders off the recovery companies in return for sending business their way.

No not really.

I'm quite sure you would charge extra if an animal had to be moved by you, stored by you, had to be given any drugs by you so that's not really an accurate answer is it?

The Police may well be given back handers where you are but I've not come across it down here.

<edit>Just thought, when a horse or cattle or any livestock are discovered roaming free the Police use the animal equivalent to a recovery service to pick the animals up, how much do they charge for this?<edit>

It doesn't go on anymore, nowadays there are too many prying eyes and everything has to be transparent and above board. In the old days, I'm talking decades ago it was rife. There were a lot of back handers and brown envelopes passed about but it is a thing of the past.

A lot of police vehicle recovery schemes are no longer run by the police forces themselves. There is a tendency to employ management agencies to oversee the running of such schemes, to select and vet the garages involved etc. This takes the pressure off the police force and helps to provide this transparency in the scheme.

For example a arm of the AA run quite a few of the county police force recovery schemes (I don't mean that AA men go around picking up stolen motors etc) but that the AA manage the scheme on behalf of the police. GRG Public Resources another big company manage a few schemes too and they not only specialise in vehicle recovery schemes but also for emergency boarding up and emergency key holders too.

Unfortunately all of this comes at a cost and that cost is passed on to the person receiving the emergency service. The statutory fees that you have to pay are there to cover the costs involved and although you may pay your £105+ to the recovery garage (in our case) they don't get to keep all of that money themselves. They have to pass a sum of it on to the management agency and any other agencies involved (such as the people who do the call handling, sometimes a debt collection agency too) that are all part of the 'police' scheme that they are working for collectively.

Surely the point is not how much it costs you to have it recovered by the police, but the fact it costs you at all. (yes I know, tax payer pays in the end)

Can you imagine the outcry if the police started charging for fingerprinting your house after a break-in? Seems to be the same thing to me......

They just moved it, they didn't try to rebuild it or do an engine change.

As for moving animals, I don't. I'm not equipped to. If the police call me to see an animal I tell them to bring it to the surgery. I'm not a paramedic, it's either so sick it needs the facilities there or it's not sick enough to be bothering me with at that time of night

They don't. They open the nearest field gate and shoo them in there off the road. They then consider their work done and leave it for someone else to clear up the mess.

If your dog is 'recovered' by the dog warden it is £45 to get it back unless it was microchipped in which case it is free.

Times gone by, they used to fling the likes of a bike in the back of the police van and take it back to the station for you to collect it. Hell, I've even had them drop one off at my house before now. Now it's just found, bang, recovery, do not pass go, do not save time and money by actually using your brain.*

* By which I mean, Stolen motorbike with no engine in it. Can't have come very far. I know, let's look up the owner on the PNC. Oh look, that's literally 100yds up the road, let's go knock on his door. As opposed to 'let's stand and wait for over an hour for a recovery truck'. FFS.

Classic cop shop robbery, didn't know this still went on.
I've had this twice before, they lied to me and since then i've opened my eyes to a lot of things they get up to.

One more thing to clear up... Am I currently paying a fee to them everyday to keep the bike in the "compound", or in other words is my debt building up the longer I leave it. What happens if I never go and get it... would they send bayliffs round trying to take my other bike or something?
At the moment I really dont have the money, I sort of micro-manage my finances being a student an all, and unexpected events that I havent predicted for upsets my calculations I made for survival funds... gay...
