So I was looking through eBay yesterday and saw one was a 2001 model! Shocked considering most 400's I have been looking at were M Reg at best I was quite shocked really, now I don't know whether to buy the VFR 400 with a Tyga Bodykit or a newer (but not quite as great looking looking, although pretty sexy looking) zxr 400. Are there any pros and cons? are either faster derestricted? opinions on the topic and general information of the bikes would be much appreciated, thanks again...

All 400's are prettymuch very similar performance wise.

The ZXR was the last one to stop production if I remember correctly.

Most of the others GSXR, VFR, CBR, FZR etc are getting pretty tired now and it's getting harder to find really good ones.

The RVF may be worth looking at as they should be in better condition although they do cost a bit more.

Hi;
I have a zxr, I havent had a lot of problems with it to be honest. It was my frist big derestricted bike, altho some peple probably laugh when I say big. It is plenty big enough for me at the moment anyway. You get wrist ache after a while (but if you keep both wrists trained by a lot of wanking or other activity it should be fine). I dont know much about the service costs or anything yet, or reliabilty, I havent had any problems since April (thats when I bought it). The bike is amaizing after 10krpm till about 13-14...
and my pillions say its comfortable, if you have shortarse friends theyll be happy.

CBR400s are a bit overpriced I think, considering their age.
Hope it helps a bit, ow and apparently the myth has it they are better engineered than the of the era 600s... just a myth...

I went at the furthest about 2-3 miles on my mates Baby Blade, pretty much the most uncomortable bike Ive ever been on the back of Thumbs Down lol, had a small go down a side street, and was alright, but was a TINY go. Cant comment on the ZXR, but I hounded afterone for ages when i was about to get a bigger bike, but ended up with a zx6 Smile

Ive heard that the ZXR do have a lot of bikes with probs, honda usual more reliable. Not heard much about the FZR.

Id go for it if you can afford it, can always sell on again for about the same if somethings awry Smile

ZXR engines are bad.

Honda Reg-recs are bad

Suzuki GSXR400 - Carbs are bad

don't know about the yam, but every one of the 400's has it's own problem.

The ZXR engines aren't that bad, ok the headgasket lets go everynow and then but when they spend most of their life at 14,000 rpm who blames em! Laughing

Correct, they made the ZXR400 right up until 2003.

I have an NC29 and an NC30.
Both are made of Win! Cool

Only problem ive had with them (both of them) is regulator failure! Laughing

I now carry a spare under the seat with the tool kit. LoL.

Performance wise, they are all similar, Ive ridden a ZXR4 and an FZR4. I still and always will have more confidence when riding the NC29. I dont know why, it seems to just out handle all of them (in my opinion).

Although the NC30 is very nimble, I need to raise the rear a bit as its very slow at turning in at the moment compared to my NC29.

Stacey (mate of mine) has a GSXR4, Shall be playing on that come summer. Playing on her too hopefully. Wink

For the money they cost, theyre all shite in comparison to the 600's you can buy when you get up to the £1600 price bracket.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Was there any particular reason why these companies stopped making their 400s?

AFAIK the japanese bike licensing system became easier, so people could get onto bigger bikes quicker thus eliminating the 400cc market.

Things to look for on a zxr 400...
Arrow Check for engine noise, clutches rattle engines shouldnt
Arrow The mountings on the oil cooler rot off and the cooler ends up being held on by tyraps.
Arrow Head gaskets, camchains, valve clearances are renowned weakpoints.

Ive had one for four years now and absolutely love it. It would take alot to prise it from my hands. It's used every day for commuting and weekend jaunts!

Why is the age of a bike such a put off?

My 1978 400/4 still ran like clockwork.

Had an 03 zxr400, great bike. In standard settings it is the fastest 400, reaching 140mph. Did have one problem in the 16k miles I did in that all the rockers needed replaced and the camshafts got twisted, all covered by kawas 2 yr warranty and the dealer who fixed it said the problem was the other dealer who serviced it hadnt used fully synthetic race oil.

Apart from that a fantastic bike, and real fast in the twisties Thumbs Up

Use fully synthetic in a zxr 400 and you will get so much clutch slip you will be barely be able to move.

They use 10/40 semi synth.

Shouldn't really make any difference.

All the best
