... isn't the age of the participants, or the date they joined, but the karma system.

If you give people an incentive to post in every thread in the hope of a positive rating, things eventually end up like this as the userbase grows.

As some people have figured out, sitting in the workshop section and spamming useless, vague and overly-speculative drivel in every thread there will rapidly get you the coveted gold blobs. The fact that your advice is shite doesn't seem to factor into it. This attitude carries over to a greater or lesser extent into every other part of the forum.

Does karma help or hurt this forum as it stands today? What purpose does it serve here other than to give people an almost always unjustified sense of superiority?

Hi

It does help, because it stops people getting too insulting and points out the real spammers quickly.

All the best

Hi Keith, good point, but couldn't that also be solved (as on most other forums) by more agressive moderation? Spammers can easily be banned if they're brought to the attention of moderators. The effectiveness of karma in stopping people being overly insultive is debatable Wink

This is also why an admin is needed who is online more often, just to check that everything is going as it should be. I regularly see who is online by looking at the box at the top of the index and I have never seen Korn or Mods online in the 6 months (?) I have been here.

There are two issues there; young users and new users.

There are plenty of new users who aren't young and/or particularly immature and don't give a damn about the karma system. They come here to read interesting stuff about bikes and interesting banter.

There are also a lot of new users who are also, generally, young and DO give a damn about karma, and see the accumulation of it as a way of being accepted into some sort of clique, which just isn't the case.

I don't think there is really a backlash against new OR young users, and if there is it's misplaced; there's a backlash against karma craving whores who are almost always new AND young. Please note I'm not saying everyone new and young is like this.

I think the karma system encourages people to see gold blobs as some sort of indication of their reputation, which just isn't the case. Many of the oldest members here (in terms of joining date) have less karma than people that have been here a few months. That leads me to question whether it serves any purpose at all anymore?

Most of the bitching is being done by the aforementioned newbies.

No one is suggesting all buying the same bikes or that everyone should act the same way, all that's being suggested is not to be a dick head.

If newbies weren't being such dickheads, people who would have no problem with them. Before loads of newbies start complaining, if you're not being a dickhead then there's no problem!

Karma has absolutely nothing to do with if people will like you or not. Just be yourself and people won't have a problem, unless you're a dickhead in which case you're not going get on easily with people. Rolling Eyes

People will like you if you're not a dickhead, walking into somewhere and telling people "well if you don't like me, you can just leave now!" isn't going to make you popular. Think about it, it isn't exactly complicated. Rolling Eyes

Why do you think he does it? If people stopped playing up to him and the other attention whores then they'll soon shut up and find a new audience.

It's one of the best features on this forum, imo. Mine hasn't changed for a couple years, but I can see how it helps on a daily basis. I struggle to think of a way, directly or indirectly, that it hurts the forum.

I reckon karma is a good idea as it can lead you to know what people like or dislike about your posting style.

I find it intersting how people rate my posts, it doesn't bother me if I'm honest. I rate posts that I find interesting as such, and I'll neg a post if I feel it deserves it. I hope that people rate my posts as such, I don't see much neg karma but I think that's just because I don't tend to write offensive/bad posts.

I reckon its a good idea that allows people to gain insight to how they are posting.

I don't very often rate posts, but if is a particularly nasty one or a very good one I will rate it. I don't care about the blobs, surprised I have a few green ones tbh.

As has been said not all young people are idiots, I have been out a couple of times with some of them from the north section and each time I have thoroughly enjoyed their company and their opinions on things.

i try and be as nice/helpful as possible which in turn usually returns karma.

Karma on here is better than the real life stuff that can really kick you in the ass. Mr. Green

@Halflyfe One of the many secrets about getting people to like you is to think about what your posting before you post, and to not make stupid videos that may offend many people by disrespecting many of the traits that make a biker.

I'm just bemused by posts like this which is why I haven't voted, do some of you really actually give a shit if there are more yellow blobs next to your username than someone else!! That's just rather sad in the whole relation to life isn't it!? Confused

I use this forum and post because I like bikes, can help some people, and get help from others. I don't care if I have 10 yellow blobs or 16 red ones - I am who I am and regardless of my 'karma' rating I ain't gonna change! There are some idiots on here though... I just ignore them. Karma

I like the karma thing. I messed up my own from gold to green by sticking up once for someone in f&w, think my karma is frozen though Shocked anyway I like giving karma where it is deserved. And people with red dots I stay away from.

Negative karma is useful for those who don't have the intellect to debate, or are just plain snide cowards.

Positive karma is useful for showing appreciation for a useful, interesting or funny contribution.

And as credits for the F&FW juke-box.

Ding. They banned motorcycles because of the increase in muggings using them as getaway vehicles amongst other things.

there has been some valid points already been said but,

my views

Karma system has its uses if used in the right manner,
but in my experience its not being used in the way it should, i rarely post outside of the SE section but thats my choice and most of my karma collected is from there.
but there has been the odd time where i wander out of the SE and post here sometimes and i get a Karma raping for it not only from new members but somtimes from long standing members.
theres also cases of karma bashing from friends of other users who you have cunted off, again abuse of the karma system giving out bad karma "cos you cunted my friend off".

the thing theat gets my goat up is instead of posting and saying " hey slim i dont agree and think your talking total bollocks "
people hide behind the karma system and Thumbs Down your posts.

i might not post intersting shite here, ok fair enough then just hit the reply button and get your point across instead of hiding behind the karma system.

give posative/negative Karma where due but come on use it properly.

Slim
