| Quote: | Craig, what does Illustrator do differently, i've never used it? |
A heck of a lot.
Some of the tools are similar and both programmes utilise a multi-layer basis, but Photoshop uses pixels (blocks of information) while Illustrator is vector based (mathmatical coordinates).
Unsurprisingly, Photoshop is best used for image manipulation, be it relatively high quality, but the main drawback comes into effect when creating large scale work. Isn't really an issue on a 72dpi rgb web screen though.
Illustrator is a fantastic programme for, believe it or not, illustrations. Be it vector based artwork, creating new typography, logos, etc, Illustrator copes far better than Photoshop as it has infinate resolution. A file can be created and then manipulated within a design package (for example Quark or Indesign) to any scale needed, with no pixelation (except for the media in which is producing it). Also, a lot better for getting accurate colours (which is a must when using specified Pantone references). |
