Watched Gadget Show on Monday and they were saying that if broadband companies put 'upto' 8 Mb they can give you anything underneath that.

https://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/speed_test.htm

You can test your bandwith there.

Each time I have done it I have been getting around 1500Kb/s download and 350Kb/s upload.
It's disappoitng considering we pay more to get up to 8Mb and we aren't even getting 2Mb. This has to be a con.
Everyone test it out and post up what you get.

We did www.speedtest.net on here.

Basic BB for me was 17.99 a month anyway, so when they added 'Upto' 8mb for the same price I obviously didnt mind.
I get 3-4mb on Speedtest and 3.5 on your link.
Ive just gone over to Virgin and there cable should deleiver 4mb and no less.

Err, you have read their terms and conditions, right?

https://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

Mind you, the active word there is should.

Oh, and for what it's worth, briefly reading that, it'd be impossible for the broadband market to advertise otherwise. What are they supposed to say when asked about speed, other than "depends on so many factors you'd get board before we told you them all"?

To me, at least, it sounds like another moronic media campaign to 'stick it to the man'. Rolling Eyes

Ok look at the BT website, they offer 8 mega bit broadband.

Note how they say bit not byte.

There are 8 bits in a byte, so 8 megabit broadband is the same as 8 megabyte. Most people don't know that.

So wherever you see 8Mb they actually mean 1MB.

The whole thing is a con it always has been, I though it was common knowleage, the MB is the most confusing as people think it means megabyte like ncrn.

I signed up for 20mb virgin,

I usually get between 15-1800kbps on speed tests and 1300kpbs normal downloads thats good enough for me.

I'm on the Virgin medium package for the broadband (Up to 2mb it says) and I'm getting speed tests of around 1900kb/s down and 190kb/s up from speedtest.net (https://www.speedtest.net/result/202376650.png).

I'm with TalkTalk upto 8MB and generally get around 2/2.5MB... but I knew at the time I signed up it'd be like this and I'm quite happy whilst it doesn't affect my gaming! Wink

Technically MB is megabyte. Mb is megabit.

Well i live out in the sticks now and don't have the cable option like i did have in Glasgow. Ive tried a few ISP's up here and BT on their own seem to get the best download rate.

4,385kbps so pretty much 4meg download, not going to get much better until they update the local exchange here.

What?

ALL broadband providers sell broadband in bits. They have done since the dawn of time. I have a 14kbps modem here, that's 14 kiloBITS. Remember 56k? That's 56 kilo BITS per second.

Where you see 8Mb/8MB broadband, they mean 8 mega BITS. Noone sells 8 mega BYTE broadband, that's just wrong.

I'm on Virgin Cable 4Mb and I get 3900kb/s by the way. So broadband is fine for me.

Generally, with cable you'll probably get what they say, but with ADSL chances are you won't, unless you live close to the exchange.

As carvell says:

(Copied from TalkTalk website)
How fast is TalkTalk Broadband?

When you join TalkTalk we'll give you the fastest speed we are able to, up to 8 Meg (Megabits per second) depending on the speed available in your area.

Thumbs Up

Another thing, People blame their ISP for slow speeds, Usually it has nothing to do with the ISP.

BT own the exchanges, BT will not upgrade them as it will be at their expense. Some exchanges are overloaded at busy times which is what gives slow internet speeds and that's why when you ring your ISP they say everything at their end is fine.

In most other countrys the exchanges are owned by different companys, That's why USA has silly connections like 52meg and we don't.

Unless it's LLU, and after the exchange, it does through the ISP's out routing.

Basically, if your area has bad speeds, then it's BT Wholesale's fault, if it's just you, normally it's your ISP's.

Ohh, and if you're on 'up to 8Mb', and have more than 2Mb, then your exchange is already 'ADSL Max' enabled. The next upgrade is ADSL2.

Its not a con. If they said "will always be at " or "guaranteed at " then yes it is, but saying:

"up to 8Mb broadband" is no different from when you go to a sale and it says:

"upto 50% OFF ALL ITEMS" <- and theres only 1 item at 50% off, and shitloads at 5%

Meaning they can give you 200kb/s rather than 8000kb/s if they want and as you agreed theres nothing you can do.

It also depends on connection type, distance from the exchange, a certain amount of processing power, noise on the line, global events, internet traffic etc.

Trying to guarantee internet speeds is like trying to predict exactly how much rainfall we will get tomorrow.

You try and get a decent speed connection anywhere out of one of the large citys......

A lot of the USA is still on dial up and thats all thats available.

To the OP what does he think UPTO means ????

To me it means the best you will get is 8 meg, but anything under that is possible and is the best we can offer.

The Gadget show is a joke in this instance as the server could not cope with the demand.
Also you will find when the figures come out they will be massively flawed.
Adsl is sold as UPTO, many factors affect speed. Including the distance form exchange, line quality, exchange capacity, transit capacity from exchange to your isp and finally to the dammed internet....

Most speedtesters need to be taken with a dose of salt, best test is to find a few large files 100Meg + from good quality servers and download at the same time to max out your connection.

Personally i'm now paying less for 6.5 ish out of 8 meg than i did when i first got 512k...

Whatever the upgrades, with the distances to the exchanges plenty of us are well and truely stuffed.

All the best

Aye, my ISP states both the minimum and maximum in their advertisements. I usually fall somewhere in the middle of the two figures but have gotten near the maximum rate on rare occasion.

And, yes, plenty of the folks in the mid-west are still on dial-up as broadband is only available in the larger cities and outlying areas. There's plenty of people on satellite connections as well, as there are some places where dial-up just isn't an option.

I would say do it three times, or at least to get an average before complaining to your ISP, or build a program in C, VB, PHP etc to do it for you over a sample period of say 4weeks and then submit that to channel5.

Doing it once and saying its rubbish doesnt work. Otherwise they will tell you excuses like "it was busy at that time", "high internet traffic", "uncontrollable circumstances" etc

All the best
