Tom Tom Travels!!!!

When I do my trip to France & Spain next year I am really undecided whether to take my sat nav? It’s a Tom 910 and I am thinking of modifying it so it fits on my bike but only when it’s dry as I know it isn’t waterproof. The thing is I have read a few things about them not being able to stand the temps when travelling? Is this true. Also any advice/ideas on how to fit the 910 to a Harley Sportster would be appreciated. I have thought about putting it in a tank back on the top but a tank bag doesn’t fit too well on the bike as it slopes too much. The next thing is where to visit? I haven’t travelled Europe much I have done mostly far away parts. So any help in where is good to go would be good too, I have 2 weeks to travel from Barnsley (Yorkshire) with my girlfriend. I want to travel quite a few miles but we don’t want to be constantly on the road. Maybe a 4 day or so at a final destination would be good too. Hostels & camping are what I am thinking about for the accommodation.

It is not advisable to put your sat nav in your tank bag for a long tour on a motorcycle. This is because the angle to you have to look down at the tank bag is too far for a quick glance so your far more likely to have an accident while looking down.
In my experience, you do not need Sat Nav. Maps are cheaper and better. It gives you the brief 10 or so minutes in the morning to plan your route and you can stop for breathers in the petrol stations to look at your route, make adjustments and drink some water. If you get lost, then it is an adventure (The whole point of a motorcycle touring trip).

took my tomtom 910 with me this year when i went down to switzerland. Essential - No, handy-yes indeedy.

i modded my oxford tank bag, cut a hole in the black material behind the clear plastic an made a ring of bubble wrap for the mount that the ear phones n charger plug into, to sit in.this did cut down on space i had but it also meant i didnt have to carry as many maps.

dont plan on seeing anything in the day th the glare of the screen is to bad, you can see it fine at night. although dont get caught up in trying to put an album on an neerly drive yourself into oncoming traffic

Just a note on weather: i had no issues with wetness when i put the rain cover on the tankbag, even threw some of the worse rain i have ever seen,. an on the opposite side had no issue with heat even in the middle of summer.

Dont worry its still plenty easy to get lost with a gps,,took me 4 miles into a forest in Germany on a single track dirt road before it decided it didnt have a clue were it was,,,

Sat nav is essential when touring abroad IMHO, but car ones are limited as generally you can't preprogramme itineraries - only a desitination and a via point.

Car ones are still good for use in conjunction with a map though and great for finding a hotel in a lrge town or city.

I noticed that spnorm mentioned some aftermarket mounts that you can buy. I have just purchased a stem mount and I know the price is a little steep but I couldn't really see any other viable place on my CBR to stick my GPS.

It also means that I can stick my video camera on there as well. I will have to post up some pictures when I get around to fitting it.

Bring it but don't just follow it slavishly as that effectively turns your hol into a package holiday.

look just use a map , and use the sat nav for finding your way back to an intended destination,

part of the adventure is getting lost, and sat nat ie never getting lost removes some of this , even Maurice on his most recent trips kept his GPS in his pocket for location checks when he got REALLY lost.

As said on my trip I would never ever have seen:

The Oneyeux bit where I got lost

and subsequently

The Chambery Gorges ,

and subsequently never have met bill or Daniel

later on

I'd never have found the N202 and would have turned round and done the N85 again.

Sat Nav takes away some of the experience TBH,

my next trip I intend to use a map again and to get lost multiple times and discover various places I'd never see before.

personally i love traveling by maps. Adds the fun of getting lost. My trip to london consided of a of A-z of london, AA Map and a planned route.

Take a gps and use it if you wish but maps are alot more fun and builds good skills up!

I completely agree with everyone's comments especially when it comes to touring aboard. The best parts of the trip are getting lost and chatting to the locals for help. More often than not they will go out of their way to help you.

However I find the GPS very handy if I just want to meet a mate somewhere in the depths of Manchester or Oxford.

A combination of maps and GPS when aboard though!

I used my Tom Tom loaded on a IPAQ hand held device, on a holiday to Italy, and with the sun shining directly onto it, it started to play up. So as others have said maps until you get to destination, then if you are really struggling use the sat nav

Maps also give you a better understanding of the world around you. Using satnav often tells you the best way, but you don't know any of the local geography.


Its a nice feeling when you've been somewhere using maps and you see the whole picture, then maybe a couple of weeks later you see something in the news and know that you rode just to the west of it, or you joined the road leading to that town where a major fire just happened or so.
With satnav you never get the overall geographical understanding like you get with maps which I regard as an important part of travelling!

I hate sat-nav systems, actually quite proud the car I recently bought has an anti-gps heated windscreen to thwart any passengers attempting to use it.
