My China Lecturer put this to us the other day...

What do you do?

Do you continue to wear the cheap clothes made in China by a poor man on one bowl of rice a day?

Or do you not buy it out of protest at the conditions and the poor man not get a bowl of rice at all?

I'd say option A

If everyone went for option B his factory may close down and he would be jobless and unable to afford even a bowl of rice.

Option A may not be fair by our standards but its a damn sight better than being jobless in his neck of the woods.

I wear the cheap clothes. Nothing I do will make the slightest bit of difference in China, or any other country.

What the hell are you on about?

We were and are the biggest bullies in the international system for centuries.

I'm all for giving a bit of help, cancelling debts and what not, but im not going to bend over backwards to help them, the simple fact is society needs poor people and countries, someones got to work in McDonalds.

Keep buying the cheap clothing and invest the money saved in a bio-diesel making machine. Wink

Yeah we must have been fighting ourselves on our own on those wars Rolling Eyes Depression is something we invented and are the only ones to have suffered it, our factories were never the cutting edge of industrialisation for their time offering some of the most up to date working conditions in the world for their time, and yeah the Chinese are safer, cause all they have to worry about is being run over by their own tanks. Of course McDonalds only employ the poor, as every other company in the UK is forced to pay minimum wage, whereas McDonalds (who i assume you were rejected by for a saturday job) are there solely to pay slave wages to this underclass you despise.

I would buy the clothes BTW, China is gradually pulling its way up through the economic ranks, and as such the standards of living will improve. Just that they are 50/60 years behind the western world, although can think of a few countries whose inhabitants are in a much worse way Shocked

okay fine, i admit im wrong on that front, but its not as if we have had a walk in the park. I really do feel sorry for these people, but I still think that the sweat shops aren't all bad, someone's got to work there to make the stuff.

No.

There needs to be someone, somewhere actually making stuff in a factory, that doesn't automatically mean they have to be paid a barely subsistence wage and work 70 Hours a week or more.

Im sorry but lol. They only get like a couple a quid a week most people in england wouldn't even get out of bed for the money there on a week. When you think about all the people who do fuck all and get payed millions and then the people who actually do something and work so they can just about feed there family, tis quite stupid.

This is going to sound corny as hell but where very lucky we were born in the part of the world which is rich.

And yes i will still buy cheap clothes because its what is available when there are two sets of sweat pants identical in every other way but one is £2 and the other is £20. Only a stupid person would pick the £20 one.

One thing people forget is that yeah maybe they are only paid 50p a day, but that's in our currency. In their currency that could well be the average or above average wage when you take into account the lower living costs.

In some factories in China their children get free schooling + meals and some factories supply them with places to live. I'm not saying it's a cake walk for them, but it's not as bad as some of the stats suggest, esp when if they weren't in the factories they'd be farming which is longer hours for less pay.

I'd like to blame the companies that shift all there manufacturing over to China to exploit the low paid workers, But its us that demand the lower and lower prices
If one company said they were going to move there factory back to the UK, pay all there workers a good wage, but the cost of the product would become 3 times as expensive, well they'd soon go bust as everybody would still be buying the cheap Chinese stuff.
I suppose one day the standard of living and rates of pay in China will be closer to ours, so it will no longer be beneficial for the companies to produce in China and they'll all move on to some other 3rd world country, not sure where that would leave China though.

I'd like to only buy British products but like said you'd be a fool to pay so much extra for the same thing.

Breeding themselves out Confused
The population of China is about 1.3billion that means that 1 in every 5 people on the planet lives in China.

Check out this population counter its not 'breeding out'

Thanks for the PM Half lyfe. Razz

You think we've had it hard? I'll give you a little insight into what sick people we had running our country 100-200 years ago.

Chinese philosophy had been for centuries that they were better than us. They didn't like Westerners, nor do they like them now. Originally they didn't have a faith system, they adopted whatever religion suited them at the time. Though the crux of it was that they were aiming towards harmony with other people, their neighbours, family or friends.

In the late 1890's the expedition from the Great Empire of Britain set out to trade with the Chinese at Shanghai, but the emporer at the time didn't want to know. In fact he made a high British general wait 28 days before letting him talk to him.

Let's just say the expedition wasn't successful. Still no trade with China, despite having so many Colonies nearby.

So what did the lovely British people do after this?

We showed the Chinese with great might off the coast of Shanhai our military power. We bombarded their coasts until they agreed to something and it wasn't trade...

...It was to accept Opium deliveries, forced upon them by the British authorities to ruin the Chinese civilian movement. To this day Shanghai is renouned for it's Opium drug dens, which originated from Britain! And the worst thing for the Chinese dynasty at the time? They had to PAY for the opium that they didn't want. Humiliation and it is exactly why they won't trust the West when we say that their pollution is causing global warming, they think it is another effort by the West to stunt their economic and industrial growth.

This is just a small example, but I can betcha all the money in the world that we have not had it bad.

Besides, in a World war, generally the whole "WORLD" was involved. Wink

As for paying extra, it's not something that particularly bothers me.

Take milk, i'd pay 10p more so long as it went to the farmers. Be it in this country or any country in the world.

We get it so good. Smile

Shocked well i didn't know that Jon B, well you lot definitely changed my opinion.
I still maintain that the sweatshops aren't that bad, I remember one presentation at my school about fair trade that i went to, they had a representative from both someone in favour and against, and although i cant remember the whole thing, i do remember them telling us that the sweat shops give the people there a better life than if they weren't there. Granted its no where near as good as our life. That, and if sweat shops came over to europe, would you be happy to pay an extra 20 quid for the same stuff that exists now?

Hi

Why would something (like a pair of jeans) cost £20 more to make in Europe? In a factory they will probably make several pairs an hour per person. Even at £20 an hour (so allowing a hell of an overhead over the wages) that is probably only adding £5 or so to the cost.

All the best

Keith

they don't its just that the companies still want the same profit margins,

oh and don't forget QC,

I remember a 1980s QC story from slashdot where a computer part cost about $2000 from one outlet and $3200 from another outlet , the difference was QC procedures.

With cheapo mass manufacturing it is cheaper to replace than to QC , thus it isn't done probably why I'm much more likely to buy made in Europe than China as the last thing I want going through my mind is ....hmm is this bike gear QC'd ? .
