So ordered my pizza, all was fine and dandy. Started chatting to the little chinese man who showed up to deliver it. It's about a 5 mile round trip from Pizza Hut to my house and he said he'd been given 80 pence for petrol.

Is he taking the piss and trying it on to get some tips out of poor uni/college students or are Pizza Hut ACTUALLY that stingy?

When I used to do pizza delivery they only paid me 50p an order sent out and that could be just around the corner or upto 12 miles away.

You'd usually make it up a bit by taking multiple orders for the sameish area with you.

But generally they are stingy, but the pizza delivery guy may have forgotten to mention if he's delivered other pizzas in the area.

What you do is start dealing dope and get your customers to call in orders for a particular combination of toppings when you're on duty.

This way you have a cast-iron defence for why you are driving round the neighbourhood making deliveries, you get paid to do it and your customers will be wanting a pizza shortly after you make your drop off anyway.

Not that I know anyone who used to do that or anything.

I used to deliver Indian take aways on my bike.

The trick is to keep all change you have hidden.

If the order was around £16 you pretend you didn't have enough change, Usually they let you keep the rest of the £20 note they just handed you.

I used to make £20 from the Indian itself with £1 per delivery. There was about 30 deliveries on a Friday night. I went home with well over £100 profit some nights. Most people don't actually mind letting you keep a few quid and you can embarrass most people into giving you the change.

Sounds really bad but most people think nothing of it.

Do they get paid an hourly rate by Pizza Hut on top of that petrol money?

A mate of mine delivers for the local Chinese and he has to pay for his own petrol out of his wages (and its his own bike, not a ped that he's riding either)

If a delivery driver didn't have change on them, I'd pay by cheque for the exact amount.

More fool them. I always tip, but if the driver is trying to pull a fast one they can fuck right off.

So do I, but if a driver tries that on me, I will make them stand there till I find the right money, and then I will just give him the EXACT proper money in very small change the next several times he delivers, they soon learn not to try and fuk me over.

Yea i tried that a couple of times, fumble around for changes for ages, they usually get fucked off and just say keep it...

And never NEVER treat the people that bring you your food with disrespect, or if you do make sure you have the food in your hands and you never order from them again...

If someone did that to me fuckit they getting their pizza licked and then gobbed in...

At the end of the day if you can afford to order pizza you can afford to tip...

Theres nothing free in this world...

Now with the exception of the sad miscreients that order a 7.99 pizza on a thursday night if you are paying on average say 13.50 for a stuffed crust... and maybe a bottle of drink, you can afford an extra quid.

Especially if you order from the same place regularly, believe me these pizza riders remember who tips and who doesent, and whos a cunt...

People who tip and are known to tip, if i had anything to do with it get generous helpings of toppings, get the pizza rushed straight from the oven to the bag, into the ped and to your door as fast as humanly possible.

Those who dont, and dont on a regular basis get their pizza taken over every speed bump/curb at full speed and general wheelie nonsesnse all the way there, so by the time it arrives half your pepperoni is on the roof of the box and the thing is colder than it is outside now...

Cunts get desgusting things done to them, simple as that.

In my opinion many of the menus have fucked over delivery riders/drivers due to the "Free delivery" nonsense... its not free, your pizza is just marked up enough that you pass a certain threshold so as you dont get wasters asking for a can of coke to be delivered 13 miles away... The rider sees nothing of that... which is pretty poor especially this time of year when they are in freezing rain so as you can stuff your face in the luxury of your own home...

By all means dont tip, but hope you dont get someone like i was when i did that job, pissed off and underpaid....

Oh and you earnt nothing Shaun you just picked up a phone and mashed a sequence of numbers in then randomly babbled a semblence of an order. Im a broke ass student, and the occasions i splash out and get a pizza i will throw in whatever change or try to at least tip a quid... As i say if money is an issue dont spend fuckin 7-30 quid on take away go buy some tesco value bread...

That's not the way the world works!

I used to get the occasional tip at a hotel I used to work at, but felt embarrassed to accept it.

I accepted a job on the basis that I would be paid minimum wage, not to feel like a complete tool having to accept money from strangers.

I never go out of my way to tip workers.

The worst are the people in Pizza Hut, they are so creepy for tips it's unreal, they even give you a bill on a little plate. I just leave my debit card on there, no cash. I'm a poor student too, doesn't mean people should feel obliged to tip me.

I ocassionally go out with my dad for dinner, he's a consumate whinger, really impatient. If something isn't to his liking (this could be anything from an absent napkin to staff that don't smile enough.) I'm forever telling him to shut up, if they gob in my food thinking its for him, I'd be seriously pissed off.

He has no concept of how poorly these people are paid, all very well saying that if they don't like their job etc etc etc. Some folk have no choice.

I usually tip anyway, I hardly ever order in though. If some poor freezing guy turns up on a ped, I'd let him keep the change.

Reminds me of a story about a local McDonalds (could be libelous) a member of staff was adding his own special sauce to the burgers... The guy was obviously confused about who's supposed to give the tip...

And with that thought, I'll leave you... Thumbs Up

I work for Pizza Hut. We get minimum wage plus tips, and the drivers get 80p per delivery fuel allowance. In a company vehicle (ped or smart car) you pay for fuel out of your float and get a receipt so you get the money back.

I usually get about £5 a shift in tips, over 5 hours. I don't try it on for more, but I have found that since I've been wearing thin gloves under my bike gloves people are more willing to let me keep the change rathe than fumble around for it.

the little Chinese guy would be Ally.

Firstly the analogy between Hotels and Pizza Delivery falls flat on its ass, what were you a receptionist? theres a difference between a customer in your hotel paying you to leave, or even you carrying their bags up to their nice warm room and someone brining you hot food to your door in the pissing rain...

Secondly, What jobs have you been doing that you dont accept money from strangers, or are all your bosses instantly kindred spirits to you?

Thirdly that just confirms my suspicions of the kind of person you are... /shrug

No where have i said that anyone should tip for a poor service. Im taking that as a given that you tip if the service was good , myself when i did the job i was easily the fastest there and i was polite to the customers (not just a hand out and a point at the receipt). And as i said pizza delivery is different to table service. Either way a fool and his money are easily parted... If i had ever waited tables for someone like you jon B you best believe when you leave that card on the little shiney plate its getting cloned out the back... Enjoy...

That isn't good, that's the expected service therefore it's no reason to tip.

Problem is, as you're so nicely demonstrating, lots of people are dickheads and feel they have a right to something extra. I pay pizza slut, you deliver my pizza, and they pay you for your time; simple really.

Anyway, it's easier just to go to Sainsburys. Razz

No, I was working behind a bar and offering wine service to many clients.

I think your personal feelings about me quite amusing as you quite obviously have some beef with me. Laughing

Lastly, Pizza Hut don't take cards out the back and the dumb people that generally work there wouldn't know how to clone an exact pizza, let alone a bank card. Wink

I used to work for a similar Pizza delivery company (name sounds a bit like a pub game) - I have just quit. The people I worked with were lovely but the work is so crap, it's cold, depressing, tiring, and little dickheads in certain areas just seem to love firing BB's at drivers, throwing shit at them, trying to push them off the bike and shouting abuse. Several times I had to stop myself getting off and headbutting them with my helmet. Plus they ask you to work stupid hours, it kills your social life, and it's just generally crap.

I have another job and was putting the hours in there to save up a bit extra to buy a bike, now granted I know people choose to work there but it's really not nice work at all, so even if you've the decency to give a 50p tip it really is highly appreciated. Obviously if the driver is being a cheeky tosser then it's a bit different Very Happy

I will admit im being a bit of a cunt myself in this thread, it just reminds me why i quit that job long ago... Underpaid, Underappreciated and allround generally shit,

just pitty the bastards that have to deal with the dregs of society and throw in a quid if they bring you your pizza quickly...

Jon B we have never met so you may be the nicest guy in the world but your posts just seem to get my back up... We are around the same age but from your posts you come across to me as someone whos a boring old fart... /shrug

Ile leave this thread alone as im arguing my point badly but i will say this again, If you dont want these "dumb!" peoples DNA all over your food dont be a cunt... Remember in the time the pizza takes to get from the shop to your door they are all alone with it, and theres some pretty devious bastards out there Razz

I work for Pizza Hut but not on the shop/delivery side of the business. I've had many of stores to look after and talk alot to the riders as some have there own bikes etc. Some of the shit these guys have to put up with is pretty crap. I know people who have been mugged, beaten and put in hospital all for a pizza or a moped. If they give a nice service I don't see why you can't tip, or at least say thanks. They always offer me free pizza at a store which is nice on a freezing day.
