I've never really suffered from spam, but over the last month or so, I've started getting loads of scams, asking for all my personal details, so they can send lots and lots of money to me. Some appear to be from the national lottery, telling me I've won, and email blah@yahoo.com with my details and they'll send a cheque out (why would the national lottery use yahoo?) others are outright asking me to participate in fraud!

I know they're all scams, so how can I block them? Does anyone have a good trick or something, or managed to stop them?

Have you given out/posted in full your email address lately? Sounds like something has suddenly got you onto a 'mugu' list.

Now I think ignoring and marking as spam/junk (depending on what email you use) is all you can really do, and hope they decrease.

You could also post a couple of the emails up here (blocking out your personal details, of course) and myself and maybe other BCF-ers might indulge in a bit of scammer baiting , see how much of their time we can waste...

If you have a domain name they will have picked it up that way. I get tons of the stuff, most now filtered via the co my domain is reg with. Look in the email option, most will have some kind of spam filter to enable. Other than that you need to do it on your pc via your email client.

Most of my emails I collect through my mobile phone, so something locally isn't much good.

I have a @mydomain which doesn't collect any spam yet, and @btinternet.com and that's where it's coming to! Sad

I might try and block them using key words in yahoos filters. :/

I use spamato proxy, which sits almost like a local mailserver and does all the spam filtering using 6 different filters. It also 'learns' the filters based on other users, as it updates itself from a central server as well as updating the server with info on mails you mark as spam yourself.

That's basically what Spamatoxy does, acts like a local mailserver/mail-proxy. Is available for Windows, OSX and Linux

Get a gmail account. I get several hundred spams a month and don't need to worry about it. The filter blocks nearly all spam messages, I get less than one a week in my inbox, and it never seems to block a legitimate email.

If there was an easy way of moving my account to Gmail I would. Sad

I'm not sure how I'd access a local server from my phone.

After seeing this thread i revisited my 'scam-baiting' email account.

I had planted that email a few weeks ago in a mugu guestbook to harvest scam emails.

I had 71 of them. Shocked

Lottery 'wins', african beneficiaries with money to move, and quite a few 'my husband died, I'm dying, help me give to charity' ones - with identical text but different 'names'. Oh and a couple of quite nasty virus urls to try to take over my PC.

Shocking.

If I get chance I wil try to mess with a few of them, just getting inspiration for the zany characters I will pose as.

Like to do my bit to waste their time, it means less time for them really scamming the vunerable.
