I was going through Southampton today during rush hour with the other half in the cage today. I really don't know the area that well and was following the instructions from the Satnav. Anyway, whilst following the directions, I only noticed at the last moment that it sent me down a No Entry Street (except local busses). By the time I saw this, it was too late to change direction. It was only about 100-200 yards of road anyway, but halfway down I noticed a CCTV camera. Am I likely to get a ticket with points and/or fine in the post?

the obvious question being was it a front or rear facing camera?

Not sure if it is a yes or a no, but if it was front facing u dont have a plate on the front. Smile

Cars do have plates on the front.

*pats on head*

and it depends if it was a traffic cam put there for that reason, or if it was just a common or garden CCTV cam. Wait for 2 weeks, if nothing comes through you've got away with it. Thumbs Up

It was one of those CCTV cameras that lives inside a dark dome, so you can't tell which way it is facing. It was about 5.40pm as well, but I have no idea how well these things can see at night (the rear plate would be lit obviously).

It most probably was just CCTV, then.

Not sure this is 'General Bike Chat' if it's about a car, though Razz.

In future if you're passing a rear facing camera in a car and suspect you've done something naughty, turn all your lights off so your rear numberplate isn't illuminated, and hold the main beam stalk on so you can still see where you're going.
And if the camera was in a built up area it's more than likely it was just an ordinary security/surveilance camera, might not have had anything to do with the road at all. Good luck.

OK do you know where it was in Soton? Any distiguishing shops or things there? As a driving instructor I know most of southampton so may be able to shed some light Cool

Without knowing any more you may have stumbled across one of the Whiskey 1 cameras that are used for spotting trouble.

A friend of mine did this, in an area she didnt know.

The police was trying to come the other way, all they did was ask if she was lost, and pointed her in the right direction! Smile

@ Fastgut, it was coming just out of Bargate shopping centre car park. I turned left at the first roundabout, and the no entry road was somewhere in that general direction. It may have been pretty much dead ahead not long after turning off the roundabout.

Thanks to everyone for your input!

Its not the Sat Navs its the people that use them that are sheep and follow every direction without using common sense. People have driven into lakes and up railway lines because the Sat Nav told them to. There is a big glass thing in front of them called a windscreen that they can look through to see where they are going, but nobody seems to use it as they are depending on the technology.

Thats a Whisky 1 camera for keeping an eye on people, Big Brother style. I guess they could pass it to the police if they were really bored but very unlikely Cool oh and it has night vision Very Happy

Ah, cool. Thanks for the info. I'm assuming I'd be more likely to expect a visit from the police if that were the case. They don't have an automated thing for sending out fines for things like that (like speeding tickets/ traffic light offences etc.) do they?

@Finglonga, I totally admit it was a silly mistake, but you know how it is when you don't know an area, especially a busy city centre during rush hour, it's quite easy to make mistakes like that.

Didn't mean you, I meant generally drivers seem to stare more at the little screen in front of them instead of the road.

Doubt you will hear anything at all about your detour. Wink Thank your lucky stars you were not in London and strayed into the congestion charge area. Shocked Mr. Green

Ah - I went through there just like you by mistake the other month (and I actually live in the place.... oops). No fine, though.
