Hi, I'm looking at a temptingly cheap Suzuki GT250 X7 on ebay (here).

The advert states that the engine has been 'ported', that the jets have been changed and by the looks of it the bike has non-standard exhausts on it.

Because of the above, would this bike be best avoided or might it be a good buy?

Thanks Very Happy

If the owner can give you exact details of what's been done and why, demonstrating a good understanding of the work then it might be a fair buy, but the reality is that it's probably going to be a mess inside.

The owner says he doesn't know who the work was carried out by, but he says he's ridden it and it appears to be ok.

I'm a little unsure...

Chriss, do you want it as a cheap hack or something to restore ?

IMHO it really would not make either of those. (it looks like a breaker to me)

You MIGHT make a hundred or so profit (not worth more than £400 asking price) if the parts are not in too bad condition (the engine is worth a fair price IF its a goody)

Thumbs Up

I would be buying it to use, so not to restore or break!

It'd replace the CB400N (which goes in for its MOT tomorrow), as the X7 is so light. I'm having trouble coping with the weight of the Honda - I've dropped it several times and can't paddle it even though I can reach the ground. Plus I do love strokers!

Not much but I could certainly afford the £400 starting price plus a bit more. I'd sell the CB400N if I bought it.

That's basically why I want it - light weight, zippy and fun. A bigger version of the RXS100 really.

I know youve prob got it now but if its ported and with new jets and exhaust as you said it 'should',in big inverted commas, be more powerful hopfully for ya,but as geri said, depends if its done right. In my experience porting is hard graft and usually is done by eye,so if ya do get it make sure it all lines up with the manifolds etc.Hopefully thats somewhat helpful.Rob

Ported will probabl just mean polished. I would just strip it down and have a look. As has been said, it will ake you an hour to reduce it to component pats.

Now I know Yams but not Suzis. If the seal on a yam between the crank webs goes its very expensive as its a crank replacement.

Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dammit, looks like I won't be getting it after all due to the seller being unable to deliver. Oh well, the quest continues...
