Apparently the tsunami has helped in a way. The place was getting too popular and illegal bars and hotels were opening up everywhere, but the drains, electricity etc.. werent up to it. Along comes a fucking huge wave and blasts everything from the face of the island, then the government decides to clamp down and stop the building work, so its all good again.

In the book, they end up tearing each other to shreds and going on a weed-fuelled paranoid cannibalistic rampage...

I'm sure its a lovely place though... Thumbs Up

Have seen the film and been to 'Koh Phi Phi' Very Happy
Was probably my favorite part of Thailand.

Although in the book it makes out that 'The Beach is off of Koh Samui which is the opposite side of the mainland.
The Khoa San Road scene was filmed in nearby Krabi not in Bangkok.

Have fun.
Don't get drunk and forget where your staying on the first night like I did Embarassed

This is where I stayed can't remember what it was called but it was only a couple of pounds a night, probably not as flash as the place your stay if you've booked an expensive package holiday.

Well well, didn't take them long to turn that beauty of a place into a toilet. Rolling Eyes

When you do go there, be sure to get that t-shirt that says

"I surfed the 2004 Tsunami and survived!" Rolling Eyes Wink Thumbs Up

The beach - love that film, reminds me of home. I guess thailand is best explored as penniless bums with little to no money to survive on. I simply didn't have enough time to head down south on the malay archipelego and visit the islands on the gulf. i guess i was staying at my cousins' whose dad is the indonesian ambassador to thailand at that point, so anything of a bum nature would have been out of the question.

Read the book of it twice and definately recommend it. Do like the film as well but didn't quite match up to it. Lot more emphasis on drugs in the book as well which they toned down for the film.
Was also a theme of the book that they were trying to escape from over developed areas (which I guess the above pic proves Rolling Eyes ).

The film was set on 'Phi Phi Leh' which has no development, my picture is of 'Phi Phi Don' which is where all the development has taken place.
A lot of the construction has taken place without planning permission, which is causing problems as the island struggles with things such as waste disposal.
Its ironic that that like said the book and film are about trying to escape from over developed areas, yet its the film and book that have caused the increased demand for development on the island.
