Right, my CB400N Superdream has just failed its MOT in mega fashion and it's not worth repairing (there is one fault - the steering lock stop being distorted - which I doubt can be repaired).

So the question is, to break or not to break? I want to claw back as much of the £195 I paid for it as possible.

Any ideas?

Think you could be struggling to make what you've spent on it.

If you reckon its not worth your time/money repairing i'd put it in your local ad paper/gumtree as a feild bike/project Wink

Hmm, I'm busy totting up what the various bits seem to go for on ebay and I might be able to get £150 if I broke it.

Could you not just get another lock stop welded on?

Or build the original lock stop back up with weld.

A steering lock isnt required for an MoT. Take it off with an Anglegrinder - job done.

Looks to me like he meant lock stop, not steering lock.

Is the material there to drill and put a bolt through? Would that get through the MOT?

It needs a few more things like wheel bearings, sprocket carrier and an exhaust stud replacing plus some more minor stuff.

It would probably be possible to repair the lock stop by welding it, but I can't do that myself and it would cost too much to get a garage to do it.

hold on chris, remember i have this whole load of CB250 parts! all interchangeable with the 400...

the frame could be sorted in a slightly illegitimate fashion...
i have a CB250 frame that has no frame number (they are identical to the 400) how about swapping everything into that frame and spot welding the frame number on?

the bike also has both front and back wheels (bearings and carrier).

also... book it into the garage near me called andersons garage if you want to use these parts, they got that 400 through the MOT with rags in the fork seals Very Happy
it made it from cornwall to exeter, so if you can get it to scrape a pass, its probably not going to throw you off. when they did my 400 and SRAD, they didnt even check the sprocket carrier.

i genuinely didnt know about the problems you've listed, and if you want some sort of refund ill see what i can do, its the only decent thing to do i suppose.

You probably don't need to bother. It used to be fairly common to get a replacement frame with no number on. There are a lot of pre-1990's bikes out there with no frame number.

Another vote for build it up with weld. You'll get a whole lot more money for a bike with 12 months MOT.
