Cog Head's bought a car thats 100miles away, the road tax has expired.
A. Can i drive it home without the tax?

B. How can we tax it later without the V5 ducument as that has to be retained by the seller?

Has anyone else had this senario and would i be done for no tax if i was stopped. I don't know if the vehicle has been sorned.

Any views?

the V5 has this little tear off bit that you can use to tax with,

the new owner is supposed to hold on to that tear off bit, while the main change of owner bit is sent off to the DVLA.

I did this with my CBR very recently,

MOT + Ins , and this little slip + ££££ = tax it at post office

Yes, you would be reported to the DVLA for driving without road tax. You really need to arrange for it to be taxed before you drive it on the road if you want to be 100% legal.

Ask the current owner to tax it for you if you give them the money as they might still have a valid covernote.

If not, then it's a big risk as if the police drive past, their anpr (or whatever it is) will catch you.

Are you 100% sure that you do have this cover, as it usually only cover vehicles NOT owned by you. If you own it you ain't covered.

Could always ask the seller where a local PO is that does RFT disks.

If you have insurance and its MOT'd, i'd drive it home!

I have done all the times before!

Robspeed Kawasaki dealers even allowed me to ride my zx10r home with NO MOT, after telling me it was MOT'd and my documents would be with me through the post. Mad

Insure it, your 3rd party cover will almost certainly evaporate the moment you have the car signed over to you.

If you want to do this within the letter of the law

Buy some insurance on installments, it should start form the time of your phone call but it is always good to check

As you are insured now is the time to book an MoT, seriously. VERA 1994 Schedule Two lays out how and when vehicles on the road are exempt from MoT's/Road Tax.

When it is on its way to a pre-booked MoT a vehicle is legally exempt from the need for roadtax and a valid MoT

Once you get the vehicle home you can cancel the policy for no fee under the 14 day distance selling regulations.

Or maybe not.

If you have used the service you may well have accepted it.

Huge risk nowadays as most places have ANPR in vehicles or on side if road. Police now have the power to impound the bike if not Taxed. Also Police would class it as not being insured as the Insurance would state the bike needs to be Taxed and legal on the road for it to be valid.

Tax it before you use it, if you get pulled without any tax you might end up with it being impounded. Tax laws have changed recently and the new tag line is 'no excuses...'

Government tossers indeed. But meh, whatchagonnado?

Also there might be something in your insurance small print saying that the car needs to be taxed for the insurance to be valid. Confused

Bit like driving over the speed limit. Most places have speed-vans on the side of the road. I'd suggest you not bother riding if you expect you'll go even 1mph over the limit.
As your insurance policy states you have to ride/drive legally, your insurance will be invalid, so the police will also do you for no insurance.
They will also run over several kittens on the way home, just to prove a point. Razz
(Yes, the above is a joke, for those that don't get it, although if you don't, you probably won't read this either!)

It is a risk, as is most things, but not as high as some would make out. I've never known anyone to be done for no-insurance when they have it and are getting done for no tax.
I do not believe that you are uninsured when you don't have tax anyway.

Proving that you've used it could be difficult. It's not like leaving a brown streak in underware you are taking back to the shop...

Your insurance policy may well only cover you to drive vehicles that a) are not owned by you, and b) are themselves insured.

If you were pulled, you wouldn't only be driving without tax, but insurance too.

If it was just tax that was missing, I'd probably drive it home, and sort tax as soon as possible. I've heard that they can impound your vehicle etc but when I got caught without tax in a car I never heard anything more about it, despite telling me I was going to be reported and fined.

How do you know this about his insurance policy?

Plenty of insurance policies I've had don't specify this, while others have.

Presumably it'll tick the 'not owned by him' box too, because it'll be owned by his son instead. In the case when you're buying it for yourself, I'm sure some people have agreed with the seller that it's actually an extended 'test drive' and the sale will be completed when you get home safely Smile.

The booking of the MOT could be enough.

Hence this bit:

I've not seen many policies that offer blanket cover for all vehicles, unless he's got a trader policy.

Every policy, and I do mean every policy, I've had on bike or car over the last 15 years has had that proviso on it. To be insured third party only on any vehicle you MUST NOT own that vehicle and the vehicle MUST have a valid insurance policy running on it already.

But hell, what do I know? Rolling Eyes

Cheers

Erm, oops my bad, obviously didn't read as it was in the quote I quoted Smile.

My apologies.

Grim reaper:
You know that every policy you have had has said that.
As said, some of the policies I've had have, some haven't. It seems to be the case that less policies I've got recently have said that, whether it's policies changing or companies I'm insured with changing I don't know.

I just don't want the bloke to end up getting nicked for no insurance.

To answer your question, I think that insurance companies got wise to people insuring a C90 and then riding their wife's R1 that just happens to be in her name and parked in the garage. Hence the valid insurance clause was born.

Cheers

Check the small print of your policy. Usually the car has to be seperately insured by the owner/registered keeper for your third party only cover to work.

You may be driving it uninsured which is much more serious than driving with no tax.

TBH if a copper stopped you and you showed him the V5 slip, the receipt for the car and the MOT he'd probably let you off... but that doesn't mean you won't get done by a tax camera.

Insurance Companies are getting to see the MoT status of vehicles now?

Hi

Not got the full documents here, but the "Statement Of Insurance" for my FZR600 says "Third Party Only cover is provided in the UK while the Policyholder drives with the owners permission a cycle not belonging to him/herself".

However as mentioned previously that is the vehicle only covered while being driven. So when not being driven but on land with public access (such as a petrol station forecourt) it would not be insured which would be an offence.

All the best

Keith
