Hi all.

I would like to take a trip next year on the bike to one or two of the Scandinavian countries, especially Norway, for 1-2 weeks. What's putting me off is the "horror" stories of how expensive the cost of living is in these countries.

I was wondering if anyone has visited Norway or any of the other Scandinavian countries and what their experiences of the cost of accommodation, food, fuel etc was?

I would be staying in b&b's or hostels. Campings not really on as I would have a pillion and limited luggage space.

Cheers for any help.

Don't have any advice unfortunately but will be watching this thread as i also have been thinking about touring Norway sometime in the next year. Mainly influenced by the pictures i've seen of the atlantic road and fjords etc.

Some come on people, what's the score?

But on the other hand, camping is free if you avoid camp sites. Cool

A trip to the Nordkapp is a legendary stop for all touring bikers.

It is the northen-most point of earth in Europe.

I so wanna go there.

And YES, it is expensive. Another downside is the rigourous 90kmh speed limits (55mph)

Except on motorways, where it's 120-140kmh depending on the season.

Look out for the elks & the reindeer, btw. Hitting either tends to be fatal even in a car. Both tend to be active at dusk.

Sorry but i've spent a few weeks on expenses in Norway and it is mental expensive.

The last time I went was about 4 years ago, but even then it was nearly £7 for a pint. A single shot of spirits was more.

A curry for 2 people with 2 beers cost £96

My Norweigan colleagues weren't that nice either. But that could just be them. (They also seemed to all have small feet, but thats another storry).

Some nice scenery in Norway though.

I've also been to Sweden (Gothenburg/Goteborg) as recently as last month and price wise its okay, slightly more expensive than Northern England, probably on a par with London. They are not as bigger drinkers as we are though. I ended up drinking at a theme english bar and a theme irish bar.

Best of the lot really in my opinion is Finland, its far cheaper than Norway and Sweden and the people were great, bars fantastic (stayed in Helsinki).

I've had some great times out there including going to an ice Hockey match to watch Helsinki Jokerat play. (There national sport it was mental).

I was also out there mid December last year in the hight of Christmas season, did the Christmas markets and tourist thing.

They have a bank holiday in the middle of December their national day and I had an unforgetable night out on the town.

My colleagues are all casual at work and they are quite the jokers, anyway I was invited out on their Christmas do and I was told jokingly or so I thought it was a black tie do.

To cut a long story short, I walked in to a restaurant which belonged in James Bond film (soo Elite), wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt. I looked an absolute tool.

Finland absolutely is the best! But I may be biased...

You mean "Jokerit" (the Jokers, in English). My home team, been a fan since, erm, 1972. Great sport, broke a few bones playing it. https://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/images/smilies/new/0711/noteeth.gif

6 December, the Independence Day. Been celebrated since 1917, when we asked and Lenin kindly granted independence from Russia.

You do realise though that the Norwegian people don't actually pay that sort of money for their booze. They stay at home and drink homemade moonshine called 'aquavit'.
